Q about console gaming

I'm not a console game guy but recently released or to be released games are making me wanna stop playing pc games and buy a console.

what i wanna know is how is it that the games get better and better, in terms of graphics, when the hardware remains the same since the day it came out.
in PC, graphics get better and better cuz new hardwares come to support them... that's not the case in consoles, it's not like you can upgrad your PS2 or XBox...
so what is it?

thanks

I've always figured it was an increasing sophistification (sp? is that even a word?) of the design process.

the one benefit to designing for a consol system is that the developers know that every system is going to have pretty much the exact same hardware configuration. they can optimize it for that setup, and as they work with it more and more, they can learn tricks to get more graphic quality out of the same hardware specs.

They get use to designing and coding games for that single platform. The platform doesn't have variations and if so it is always a bad idea! N64 made people upgrade to more ram affectively to increase it from 4 to 8mb I think with the newer plug in ram. It felt some gamers to pay extra or without the extra stuff that it could not run.

They just optimise and learn new methods to do it. More experience coding for it.

The 9800pro if used to it's full capability would be one hell of a gaming card! But Pc developers have to make there stuff scale. They can't optimise for a single card that would be suicidal!

I look at consol and PC gaming as totally separate experiences (separate but equal, I guess).

I enjoy consol gaming because I spent my entire working day working on computers. The last thing I want to do when I come home to relax is sit back down in front of my computer (not to say that I don't, but generally only to check e-mail, read message boards, and talk on AIM).

With PC games, however, you can have much more sophisticated games (ex: compare The Sims for PS2 to The Sims for the PC). Plus, it's easier to take advantage of an internet connection for MMORPG's and lan party FPS games. And there tends to be a wider variety of PC games, since any code monkey with a graphic designer on his shoulder can put out a PC game (albeit not a good pc game, but a game nonetheless).

What's been helping me to enjoy PC games more has been the addition of a PS2 controller to my computer. I originally bought it for use with FFXI ($10 radioshack adapter), but I've been using it for as many games as possible lately.

The biggest advantage that I can think of for a console is the ability to have multiple players on one system. Granted this can suck if you have to split a small TV screen. But, its often easier to have one console than to have 4 computers in the same room.

Yeah, if you look at some of the tech demos for the 9800 or even the 9700 on ATI's website the look amazing, likewise for Nvidia's. It would be interesting if either ATI or Nvidia developed a game themselves, specifically for their hardware.
