Q about band of brothers

I just finished watching all of the band of brothers episodes on DVD.. great series.. thought it was an awesome story. There was one thing in the movie that I dont understand, maybe someone else who seen it can explain. At the end of the movie the german officer surrended his luger to cpt. winters but winters told him to keep it out of respect I guess.. but in the extras with the interview of the real cpt. winters he has the luger.. how did he get it?

Was it the same luger? He probably had a different one?

Either that, or the movie took creative license 😛

Not sure the answer, but why the hell wouldn't they stay true to the real story. Why did Speilberg have to use his creative license and change what really happened?

It wasn't the one that belonged to the soldier that had it in his pocket when it went off, was it? I would guess that one of his buddies would end up with it before Winters, but I suppose it's a possibility.

What they didn't show in the movie was after the German Officer turned his back to walk away, Cpt Winters (with an evil grin) pulled out a knife, pounced on the German from behind, and cut his throat from ear to ear. He then took the Lugar from the German, as well as a few other personal belongings. Today, Cpt Winters not only has the actual Luger, but one of the German Officers severed ears. 😉

Do you realize how common Lugers were doing the war?

Yes, he was serious. One of the Officer's ear was actually auctioned on Ebay when the series first came out.

I attempted to purchase the severed ear on eBay, but I was quickly outbid. I tried for the next best thing from that war: A necklase of German kneecaps from the battle of Bastogne. Unfortunately, I was outbid on that too. 🙁

Yup. I've got a bridge in Brooklyn for sale, too. Cheap cheap cheap!

Winters came across several lugers, if you recall he traded them for photographs of himself and his officer(can't remember his friends name at the moment).
Not sure if that part was fiction/authentic.

IIRC, didn't someone pick up a Luger for the captain at one point?

I think he took it in real life...

artistic liberties were taken I believe. Watch the interview with the real one afterwards

Im pretty sure it was the same luger that the offier gave him.. not just some luger her picked up off a dead soldier
