PWNT by my apartments

Yep. Just got seriously owned by my apartments. They must be laughing at my failure to see what was happening.

Ya'll may remember my financial issues back in Oct/Nov. For a few months I was late on the rent because of that. But I'm mostly straightened out and haven't been late in a while.

In March I was told the apartments wouldn't do another 12 month lease because of the times we were late. Instead they wanted to do a 3 month lease to make sure I was "reliable" again.

Old 12 month lease: $1148 month
New 3 month lease: $1203 month

We were "promised" that the rent would go back down when we signed a new 12 month lease. Of course none of this was in writing - pwnage #1

So the 3 month lease is coming up. We got the letter last week (!) saying the new lease options are:

12 month lease: $1203 month
3 month lease: $1697 month

There's no way I can move by the 1st of July both financially and physically. So I'm stuck. And there's no way I can afford $1700 a month even for 3 months. pwnage #2 When I asked why the rates went up so dramatically, I was told, "We're renting like crazy!"

They obviously knew they were raising the rates during my 3 month lease. And knew they'd be trapping me.

The letter BTW was postmarked on 6/2, so they did send it early enough. But we've had issues with the postal service for the past couple months. It took 3 weeks to get the last 2 utility bills, for example. So it's not the apartments fault I didn't get the letter in time to do anything about it.

It's all my fault for letting them do this to me. But it sooooooo ticks me off. I'm stuck here for 12 months now at $1203 a month because that's my only option.

Technically, any time your lease is up, they can raise the rent anyways. I'd say $50+ isn't so bad considering the market right now. My old land-lady was nice enough to let me have my place for almost 3 years on the same rent, but people moving into the other units were paying $400 more a month for them.

If I was a landlorn and had a flaky tennant, I'd charge 'em higher rent too. After all the worse your credit, the more you pay.

I can't believe they would even lease to you after being late on rent. Consider yourself lucky.

Are you kidding? They make bank on late rent. $200 any time I pay past the 3rd. And my history before and after those 3 months was fine.

No, they were just using it as an excuse to get more money from me. I accept responsibility, and just wish I had thought things through. I would have moved rather than sign this 3 month lease if I had realized what was happening.

Month to month rental fees are normally higher than if you lock in to a longer term, normally a year. i did live in an apt in Tampa that offered 7 month leases, though. I think I signed a 1 year lease initially and a 7-month lease the 2nd time, then we moved back to the mid-atlantic.

At 1200/month you can afford a decent townhouse. Apartments/landlords is the suck.
