PVR's?

I'd like to take a shot at buiding a small form factor machine, possibly an SK41G, to operate as a PVR. Unfortunately, as I think about this project, I realize I have no idea what I need to do. Can anybody point me to a good article (web or dead-tree) to give me some background and get me started?
