Get a Replay TV. The service is free for life and you can get a 100$ rebate. It is like 200$ I think orig. you can get another harddrive and get more room. Oh and what is an SVR? I think you meant PVR

If your crap only fills a corner of the room, you need more - MUCH more.

I have used Tivo as well as Dishplayer by Dish Network (basically the pre-cursor to MS's Ultimate TV). I really like the Tivo service, it's certainly worth the $10 a month...

I don't have any experience with replayTV, but it looks primitive (menu).

The best option with Tivo would be to get it integrated with DirecTV... then you are recording the digital stream right off the satellite, you aren't doing MPG encoding/decoding of the picture which causes reduced picture quality. This also allows you to store more material. My DirecTivo unit can store 32 hrs of perfect quality video! :)

Good question. I have been loking into this also. One thing I want to be able to do is watch one show while recording another.

I would also suggest the ReplayTV- my family inherited one (courtesy of my bf) around December and we have used it consistently since. The ReplayTV has no additional fees like the Tivo- and from what I have seen, it seems to be easier to navigate.

Any of these connect to your TV like a VCR or DVD player... if you get a non integrated unit then you plug the cable or cable box into the PVR... if you get an integrated PVR (DirecTivo, Ultimate TV, Dishplayer 500, etc) then it just connects to the TV and that's it.

The DirecTivo can support two satellite feeds from a dual LNB satellite allowing you to tape one channel and watch another, or tape two shows at the same time and watch one you've already recorded.

Search your local Walmart, several of them have the last version on clearance for anywhere from $99 - $199 with the monthly subscription fee.

Also read this Hot Deals thread. If you're still not sure and have a few hours available check out AVSForum.com where the TiVo/ReplayTV experts are.

Gunf1ghter,

Just wondering, or from anyone else, how do you like the dishplayer? I have dish network now, and am looking at getting it, but was wanting some consumer opinions on it first.

thanks,

Gump

I have both a ReplayTV and a Tivo. Both have their pros and cons.

I prefer the Tivo myself, since it has the most features. But, of course, it has a $10/month fee. To me, it's well worth it. I just look at it on a per day basis (33 cents a day--no big deal). To others, it may not be worth it.

The ReplayTV is great as well. Better commercial skip feature, and no fees, but less features overall.

Do some research before you buy. The AVS Forum is the best source of info on the subject of PVRs:

Here's what you do... give me your $500 or however much those things cost... and I'll waste it for you. And I'll be nice... in return I'll send you a sketch pad and some colored pencils... then you can record the shows yourself. :D ;) I'll even give you a 2-head Lo-Fi VCR. hehehe..

However comma, Replay has a number of lawsuits against it right now... Tivo doesn't. Tivo has over 3 million sold - Replay has under 70,000 sold.

That said, I love my Tivo!

I love my ReplayTV, who needs a VCR when you can have a digital VCR and MyReplayTV.com is awesome.
