I am getting ready to build myself a new system and the main feature that I want in it is to be able to watch TV on the computer and capture it. I really want Tivo like capabilities in the effect of being able to set the card to record shows when I want and watch them later. We are curretnly getting our TV signal though DIrecTV and I was wondering if anyone had recommendations as to what card to get, why to get it, and whether or not it iwll work with DirecTV.

Can't be done....

You would have to schedule manually using the reciever, and manually using the PVR card (you can't get something that allows you to take the satellite signal in and just do it that way, for obvious reasons)

Perhaps you could get a TV tuner, an IrDA unit of some sort (for the reciever), and some program that does it for you?

There's no particular reason I can't manually capture DirectTV with a capture card though, right? If this is the case, what card should I get? I already have a hauppauge winTV Theater, but the software sucks mightily.

Have you tried using
Dscaler Its an awesome Program for TV Tuner cards and well worth the download :) it will breath new life into your existing TV Capture card.

Try it out

A good thing to do would be a buy a Videocard and a TV tuner card separately because the combined Videocard/TV tuner's

Are the same price as buying both Separately. :)

I too must recommend Dscaler for tv viewing, but the timeshifting features, as I last tried them, either crash or don't work.. you're gonna need a program like PowerVCR II for that stuff link
