Hey All...
I am at a loss for my current situation. First, here are my rig's specs:
Pentium IV 2.4 Ghz (533 FSB)
Giga-byte GA-8SQ800
512 DDR MB PC-2700 (Crucial) Memory
Sapphire ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128 MB DDR (Catalyst 3.5)
Realtek ALC650 Codec
400W Antec True Power PSU
Lite-On 52x24x52 CD-RW
Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer
80 MB Maxtor HDD (ATA133/7200 RPM/2mb Cache)
20 MB Maxtor HDD (ATA66/7200 RPM/2mb Cache)
Iomega ZIP 250MB Drive
Netgear NIC 10/100
Linksys BEFSR41 Router
Now, system runs smooth as a whistle. However, when playing certain games (Warcraft III, NBA Live 2003, MVP 2003), my PC freezes cold occasionally. Now, when I play other games (GTA III, GTA Vice City, Enter the Matrix), the computer runs smooth with the exception of the occasional slow down (1 sec slow frame occurs every couple minutes).
Usually, when this happens, I do a couple of things. I go to the game manufacturer's website for any updated information (patch, forum discussion on bugs, etc) on the game. Next, I check for any conflicts with my hardware, or for new driver releases. I have all of the latest patches on all these games, along with all of the latest drivers.
This type of behavior initially leads me to believe that my video card is crapping out, or over-heating, but I am finding it hard to believe, as I have sufficient cooling in my rig (34 idle, 42 load). Also, I am not sure why it would happen with certain games and not others that seem to be more graphically intensive (GTAs).
Mind you, I am not o'cing anything right now. All of my equipment is running at stock, even though I do have Rage3d installed for o'cing the Radeon 9700pro, but have not upped my settings.
Any thoughts on why this is happenning, or do I just chalk this up to certain games not responding well to my equipment?
