I'm new to this forum, so if I'm posting in the wrong place, I apologize.
I recently bought a Samsung DLP HLT-5075S from a friend. He said he had replaced the bulb in October but it was working fine. He lives in another state, so he dropped the TV off at my Brothers house. I drove over, picked up the TV, got it home, connected the cable, let the TV sit for about 2 hours to let it become acclimated to the house, plugged it in and everything was fine. It had a humming sound, but it looked and sounded like one of the fans was dirty and needed a good cleaning. I didn't clean it, I just let it hum for about two hours. I turned the TV off. I turned it back on 15 minutes later and NOTHiNG. It acted as if the bulb had blown. Played the jingle, heard the color wheel spin up and nothing. Bought a new bulb thinking the bulb blew. Put the bulb in, taped the lamp door detector switch down....still nothing. Fooled with it for hours. It finally had the lamp light, but only for about three seconds. This has happened off and on several times the past couple of days. Last night, I messed with it again, put the OLD bulb back in it....TADA, it lit....played all NIGHT. Woke up this morning, beautiful picture......turned it off and about an hour later tried it again, same thing, NOTHING.....I'm puzzled. Three hours later I try it, it fires up, working as I type.....anyone that might have input?

Sdifox,
Let me add this....I took the back off, the humming was a fan that was dirty and sounded like it was hitting the edge of its "holder". The bulb stayed lit most of the day. I turned it off at 6pm, turned it back on at 7pm....nothing. Took the bulb out, put it back in, nothing. Took it out again, out of frustration, I kinda slammed it back in....it's worked since. Do you think the receptor where the bulb plugs in is not as tight as it should be? It seemed as if slamming it in made it work and upon realizing this, I think I've forcefully put it in the other times that it worked. Thoughts?

I hope you did not pay a lot of money for this junk. Of course moving it around like you did damaged it assuming your "friend" sold you a working unit.

You can find a new 50" tv for very little money these days and be done with this nonsense.

Number1,
Thanks for the advice, but I'd sure like to get the junk running consistently before I pass it along. I'm not into it for much, literally just change. How did my "moving it around like I did" damage the TV? It was carefully loaded, tightly strapped inside my vehicle. No more than it would have been in any household. The only rough handling came from seating the bulb after many attempts to get the thing going, and as stated above, that's when it started working. This morning I plugged it up, hit the switch and it worked fine. You can bet the farm that when I turn it off, it will fail to come back on. It's almost as if it is haunted and works when it wants to. I checked the capacitors visually, none bulged or burnt looking. Checked the ohms across the ones I could get to. I was hoping for some technical advice or help, not just "cut your losses" advice, but thanks anyway.

Vaccum the fan clean, use a swap or toothpick to clean off the gunk. I don't know the condition of your lamp socket, but it doesn't hurt to clean the socket. Just make sure to unplug tv and let it sit a few hours to make sure there is no resiual current before you do work on anything involving touching contacts.

It is possible the fan is not turning, and the tv turns on thermal protection to prevent actual damage.

Sdifox,
I did clean the fans last night. Got it going after another few failed attempts. Took the back off. (this is when I cleaned he fans). After the cleaning, I got a "check fan number 1" message. It's got to be something small since it comes on and runs good until I turn it off.
If it sits for hours, it will work ok again, but trying to turn it on within 10 or 15 minutes never works, so it could be a thermal issue, where are those thermal protectors located?
Thank you for your replies, it is appreciated.

I wouldn't know, I am not a tv repairman

I looked up your unit online and it is a heavy set that would be susceptible to damage when moved. Considering that it was moved twice in recent days (as per you original post) and that according to your friend it was working fine before, my guess is this is the cause of your troubles. Older electronics is more prone to break downs. Cold solder joints (where the electrical connection is lost intermittently between a component and a circuit board) can show up after having been disturbed by a move and would give you the kind of troubles you're having. Twice in recent days i had to repair older gears with cold solder joints. Intermittent faults. I was very lucky to be able to find the faults. But ya, if it cost you almost nothing, you got nothing to lose by trying to fix it and if you can afford to spend a few $ on parts, go ahead.

My recommendation: na, you don't want to hear it... LOL

Good luck.

I having an issue with my 56" turned it off one eve. and turned it on the next late after noon after work, and got "no picture, lamp on, no noise, no blinking ligts except the lamp blinking steady not in code form, and turned itself off in 2.5 minuters" So the bulb is firing, I re-cleaned the entire inside (just cleaned it and replaced the bulb 10 months ago), replaced the color wheel, jumper'd out the safety switch, and still the same, no picture and turns itself off in 2.5 minutes. I did look in the side port and can see dim light coming up into the projector lens from the light tunnel, not bright just dim. Any help or suggestions would be great. Cj
