while i was browsing through coldfusions website..
i ran across this.

puzzle.

how could this be?
my brain is a bit shot right now.

[mental note: GTA3 until 4 am has a negative side effect.]

The two shapes are not triangles.

The slopes on the small dark green and red triangles are different, thus the larger shape cannot be a triangle.
If you look closely you will probably be able to see that the one at the top looks as if it bows in slightly and the bottom shape bulges slightly on the hypotenuse.

damm.. haircut... you're a genius.

🙂

you sir, definately didn't stay up till 4 am playing GTA3. 🙂

thanx.

you are completely correct.
the dark green triangle has 2/5 = .4 slope
as to the red triangle has 3/8 = .375 slope.
very close but no butter.

eyes can definately be deceiving.

The dark green triangle would have an area of 5 squares (1/2bh). The red one is 12. The orange block is 7 squares, the light green block is 8 squares. That is an area of 32 squares. However, if the overall shape were a triangle, it would have base 13, height 5, which is an area of 32.5 squares, so obviously it cannot be a triangle.

If someone wants to get technical and break out Chief SOHCAHTOA and prove the angles on the two triangles are different, have at it.

If you look at the vertical points on the slops of both 'triangles' then you can see a small, but significant, difference. This small difference alot the entire slop is equal to one whole square in total

I printed out the page and actually cut the pieces out. I can rearrange the bottom one to look EXACTLY like the top one. It is a property of triangles or something because there is no trick.

EDIT: Ah yes, I see now. When put together like this:
_______
\*****
*\****
**\***
***\**
****\*
*****\
-----------
There is a gap in between the diagnal line.
