Getting an iPod Nano, but I wanna load my own library on there & not purchase anything from iTunes.
What are my options besides Winamp (if any)?
Thanks in advance.

Songbird is very very promising, still in beta though.

There is some plugin for Windows Media player which is my fav at the moment, it costs a few bucks but it works exactly like you expect it to work, nor problems.

Good idea, you can play FLAC and other formats with this as well, even dual boot to the apple software.

RockBox will let you just copy and paste it using Windows Explorer.

Rockbox is awesome. Also trying out Floola which works without modifying your ipod at all. So far it works great and best of all is free.

So do all of these refrain from duplicating every single song in your My Music folder the way iTunes does? Can you just add songs and videos that you have saved or am I going to end up with two copies of every song?

Also, do the other functions still work such as managing calendar, photos etc. I haven't owned an ipod and I doubt I would use it for anything other than music but still good to know.

While Songbird is at least a year away from a viable 1.0 release, I agree that it shows promise. Like it's elder brother (Firefox), it opens up the app to user addons, which will help the app in the long run.

I thinking about writing some code (starting with addons) for Songbird once my semester ends. Songbird can currently import my iTunes library, but doesn't support smart playlists yet. I guess that's a place to start.

Can you import mp3's into Songbird and directly add them to an ipod or do they have to be converted to aac?

There's no conversion needed as far as I can remember. I just chose not to use it as yet due to its inability to make smart playlists.

Is there a way to write the iTunes ratings (or WMP ratings) to the actual mp3? I'd like to use one of these alternatives but use the ratings I've made so far. My music collection is pretty massive.
