Putting together new computer tomorrow..

I usually do it in this order

WinXP install
SP2
Windows Update
Chipset drivers
Misc. hardware drivers (video/sound/etc.)

heh, i just install windows first (duh) then install the chipseet drivers and usb. then install the window updates(including directx) then the sound card vid card ect. then games 🙂

Well, you'll have to setup your Internet connection (DSL/cable/dialup), so you may have to load drivers for your modem and/or NIC first.

I do:

Windows (SP2 slipstreamed), D-Link wireless card drivers (needed for internet), Windows Update (automatically does this), chipset drivers, video drivers, sound card/other various drivers, Norton, then my basic programs such as AIM, 3DMark05, Everest, etc.

Check your local computer hardware stores. I purchased SP2 for xp for $5....was nice to avoid the sp2 dl plus then I had better security while getting the rest of the microsoft updates. My mobo driver disk had had directx 9.0c. I know windows 2000 has directx 7...not sure what xp comes with.

What a rip off. Microsoft sends it to you for free!

I ordered before the release, and got my CD in the mail three days after SP2 was RTW.

I have had SEVERAL problems with applying SP2 after installing XP. Every time I have done it, something has acted a little strange. I have never had any problems directly installing from a XP SP2 slipstreamed disc. I would definitely recommend making one. Other than that, not much to contribute... I generally do:

XP SP2 slipstream
DX 9.0c redist
chipset drivers/video drivers/any other hardware
Office and Office service packs
Windows Update
edit sysoc.inf
XPDisableShellImagePreview.reg
Firefox and Flash Player for NS
ACDSee
QuickTime Alternative
Real Alternative
Acrobat Reader
Windows XP Bootvis 1.3.36.0

... and if you're giving it to a semi-clueless person who isn't going to stick to Firefox and avoid downloading stuff they shouldn't, definitely install Ad-Aware and preferably Ad-Aware, Spybot and Bazooka.

If you plan to install sp2 do it BEFORE your drivers or you may have serious issues afterwards. 1 of my boxes isn't patches to sp2 and isnt going to be. It was more hassle than its worth and I use other firewall/AV/spyware solutions.

Get sp2 on disk and install that upfront before connecting.

The firefox tip above is absolutely on point. Delete the Icon off the desktop.
