Putting together my media center this weekend - spring for Vista or get Win 7

Here's my config - pretty mediocre stuff since I just want to be able to watch netflix/downloaded media/ and perhaps Blu Rays (bluray-rom in the mail):

Amd be something or the other (dual core, 1.9 ghz but only 45w)
2 gig ram
1 TB hd
780g integrated graphics with hdmi

I think that this system might run pretty sluggishly on Vista and that Windows 7 might be the way to go - opinions? Is the latest build not ready for primetime or worth a shot? It seems like now is a very bad time to buy an OS either way.

Thoughts?

Where can you buy it?

Welps, i mean the publicly available beta
You have several options.
1. Buy some Vista version now
2. Buy some XP version now
3. Download some Linux distro now
4. Try Windows 7 until August
5. Wait until Windows 7 goes on sale

I say download the Win7 beta and use it until it expires in August. It is stable and robust, and free.

Sounds good - after doing a little bit of research it seems that all vista drivers are compatible - w00t!

Thanks 🙂

Combine those two, use W7 beta until you have to upgrade. M$ has stated that you won't be able to "activate" a W7 beta by buying a license, you will have to do a new install. And you better hope W7 is available for sale before the beta expires or you're going to be sitting on a paperweight.

Windows 7 is SO MUCH BETTER then Vista. Although it's still quite bloated, using about 512mb of RAM atm on my rig, there is just a more refined feel to the OS.

I would go with Win7.

It is free so if you do not like it, or you will find that some applications that are very important to you are Not compatible you can always buy Vista later.

Takes only 25 minutes to install Win7, it would work very well on any computer P-4 and above with at least 1GB memory and decent Video card.

Also doing an HTPC build this weekend !! I don't feel like starting tonight, but my guess is mine will take longer than yours, due to the audio hookup.

Specs:

MSI 7411 Diva Media Live 5.1
AMD 5050e
Seagate 1.5tb 32mb SATA HD

I'm sticking with Vista Home Premium just because I won't have to blow it away and start over in August. I'll snag some free copies of Win7 by going to the rollout launch events, but have no need to upgrade to it simply because my Vista machines are loaded when it comes to hardware, and they run very well for what I do with the PC.

Hmm I wonder why it's using RAM, could it be caching programs???

Nope, thats system, i have another 1gb of RAM full of cached programs. So, really, I have 1.5 GB of RAM usage at idle, if I'v been playing a game of course, but system usage is about 512. Whatever it's using it for, it's using it well 😀
