Putting Together Cheap Machine

I'm thinking about building a computer regular day to day uses, like using the internet, downloading music cough* legally* and all that other garbage.

I'm not planning on spending too much money for this, since it's not for gaming and whatnot, so this is what I got so far.

Case
Mother Board
Processor
Video Card (Junker, just for monitor)

I've already got a monitor, keyboard, mouse, couple hard drives and a few sticks or ram lying around, so that's all I figure I need.

I was wondering though, are all of those parts listed above compatible with eachother? I'd rather not buy something to find out it won't work.

Also, do you have any suggestions? Maybe different parts for the same price or less that would be a better choice?

Thanks for whatever input you can give me. ^_^

PS: Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, wasn't sure which to pick, this one made more sense.

Looks OK, PSU is probobly really crappy, and I would avoid TigerDirect at all costs. Make sure the RAM you have is atleast PC2700.

I'm in Canada, so TigerDirect is the only online store I know of.

What exactly does the PSU do? And how will it being crappy affect me? Thanks. ^_^

Check out NCIX.com based out of Vancouver - I have ordered a few times from them and their prices seem better than Tigerdirect.

Montreal would have been better, but if this a budget build you should be looking for a motherboard with integrated graphics. The Asus A7V400-MX (75$) is one of the most reliable out there and is particularly inexpensive. You should also get a lower clocked sempron, i would suggest the 2300+(86$) at 1.583GHz . I have this exact setup in a Antec SLK 1650B (85$) with a KVR400X64C3a/512 dimm (69$).

The ram is stuck running at DDR333, but you can change the jumpers on the board and have the CPU running at 1.9GHz fully stable and cool. I actually have this server running as a linux mailserver its been running non stop for almost 2 months now.

If you add that up you get about 315$ for the kit. The case up there is worth investing in, the power supply is one of the more important parts in a computer. That case you have up there probably has a Deer PSU or something of equal quality, you might as well shove a firecraker in the case right away...

I've built a few of these systems with the same parts and none have shown any weakneses. The case is particularly quiet too.

Hope this helped...

Good luck!

Edit: BTW those prices are in CDN$

Thanks for the information! I don't know how long I'll be saving, but I'll probably build this right after I move. I hope to have around 400$ atleast then, so I'd go with your suggestion. If not, I'd have to stick with 315 and under after shipping + taxes.

What do you mean by change the jumpers? I've never overclocked before.

Could you write out like, a step by step explanation please? Would it cost me anymore to do it or is it just a modification with the parts already given.

I'd recommend a better case with PSU included from Antec. The Solution is a great case, and it's only about ~$60 USD. Yeah, it seems expensive, but at least it has a decent PSU instead of something crappy that'll probably fail after a week.
