ok so my mate wanted to upgrade

so i suggested more ram

seen as it makes sense to buy pc3200 instead of pc2100 (this is whats already in his system, plus i can get 3200 cheaper than 2100) and this stuff was the cheapest we got a 512 stick.

so whacked it in, next to his other 512 stick (micron pc2100)

now its running just fine, and its alot smoother in windows. with the things he does.

but i wanna know will running PC3200 in a machine with a stick of 2100 be fine?

i assume it will just downclock the 3200 to 2100 speeds.

the 3200 stick is rated 200Mhz CAS3
the 2100 stick is rated 133Mhz CAS2.5

so just to be safe i set CAS3 manually in the bios for both

Yes the ram will just downclock to the lower speed and higher lat. Your freind should get another stick of pc3200 and then he'll be set for overclocking.

heh no i think ocing is out his league lol

doesnt know anything bout computers....this is the first time hes actually seen the inside of his rig. theres a ton of dust, standard intel heatsink, a spagetti of wires, shocking airflow...and a Inno3D geforce3 Ti500 with a jammed up fan, the fan is actually siezed up...im going to whack on a aftermarket cooler for him later....but apparently its been working like that for a long time
