putting on HSF

How hard is this? My brother did it for me when he built my system, and it didn't look ALL that hard, but I've heard of a lot of people burning their processors. How do you do it, anyways? I know how to put a processor and everything else in, tahts a breeze, its just I don't want to screw a nice porcessor because I didn't put the hsf on correctly.

Thanks a lot,

Thanks. It's for an AMD. If it was for Pentium 4, I wouldn't care, they stay cool enough when the HSF isn't on. 🙂

that didnt happen to me..........my heatsink came off my 700e at it hit 70c and stayed that way overnight. i was lucky it worked the next morning when i found out the problem

make sure you use good quality heatsink grease . very thin coat. watch for the way it is applied as you only want it on the core of the cpu only not on any other part of the processor.

Generally, AMD systems are much more difficult then the Intel systems. You won't "burn" your processor while putting the HSF on, but if you're not careful the core might be crushed. This is especially true for weaker Socket A cpus. Make sure to keep the pressure even, and don't ever use excessive force.

To put on the HSF, first find the end with a "metal hook." You'll want to attach the other end, and then use flat head screwdriver to latch the "hooked" side. If you'd rather play it safe, check this thread for a discussion on easy to install HSFs.

The PDF file St4rcutter linked to makes a very good point. Never use force on the HSF - only on the metal clips.
