Hello everyone. i was told this is the place to go for help. i have scanned the topics and not found the exact thing i am suffering from so here it is;

I am putting together a computer with the following,

case with 425w power supply that is supposed to be P4 rated
intell P4 2.4 cpu
machspeed mobo p4x400
512 of pc2700 ddr 333 ram
toshiba internal 8x dual format dvdrw
WD caviar 40 gb eide 7200 ata100 HD

i have reseated all plugs, cpu, but i get nothing on the screen when i turn power on thought the cpu fan comes on. if the cables are plugged into the HD or the DVD drive...they do nothing, if i leave power conected to them and no cables attached they both come on.

any ideas?

the video card is one form another computer that i know works.

Ok so you're not getting a post correct?

Just you're getting power because the HSF starts spinning so you know it's not power related...correct?

Hi rabbscuttle, to begin with, could you elaborate on what exact model of P4 2.4 it is (Prescott-core 2.4A, or one of the Northwood-core variants: 2.4, 2.4B, or 2.4C)?

Ok,

Cook 1 - no post, when i flip the switch, i get nada on the screen. the drives doen do anything, no spin, no lights. only CPU fan comes on(and power supply hums anPS fan on) .....don't think its power related because both drives will spin with power alone. neither will work if i attache cables.

mechBgon - cpu was retail box, p2.40A 1MB l2 cache version C66666-004 1.4v max packed 08/03/04

jmagg - 4 pin is attached and i have unseated and reseated it twice along with the other plugs and the CPU chip, and the cables (many times)

Oh yeah...i forgot that...i mean i did it, but i forgot to say i did it.

at least i believe i did it right. i moved the jumpers to the right pins, turned on power for 10 seconds, absoulutely nothing moved....then put the jumper back where it is supposed to be...hit power again, and the same thing: nothing on the monitor, fans working, no dives in action.

Thats a strange one.
Have you connected front usb headers? If so disconnect.
Disable onboard vga? ( most will do this automatically but some not)
Tried booting outside the case with only cpu and ram? (and vid if no onboard)

Can you get a post with just CPU/MB/RAM? And if not an onboard video add the Video Card?

When you "flip the switch" where, exactly? On the rear of the PSU? Did you mount your motherboard on standoffs? (yes = good)

The 2.4A is the newest 2.4 and is not compatible with all motherboards, so I'll be doing some investigation on that if I can find Machspeed's website. Stay tuned...

All right, Mr. Cheetah has found the likely culprit here: no Prescott support :( Maybe you can contact your vendor, explain that you picked a motherboard that doesn't support Prescotts in general or the 2.4A in particular, and could you please be allowed to return it for credit towards one that does. Good luck :)

next round of attempts....

jmagg - second round i disconected the extra USB ports, there is no onboard vid on this board.

Cook1 - I just got new videao card (needed it anyway) i am gonna try that outside the case with only ram and cpu next...

Mr Cheetah - Thanks for all the research....waiting for PM. then maybe the call to seller...

(looks for big pice of cardboard)......

ok,

I applogize for any typo's, i try to go to fast and have big hands and a little keyboard.

the out of the case test failed, still nada on anything. this also means that the new video card did nothing, but then i wasn't expecting it to.

i am asuming that the motherboard is bad or non compatible as Mr Cheetah says.

If anyone has any other ideas i will try them. otherwise i will be calling the seller tomorrow for a new motherboard.

thanks everyone

Whatever you do, don't reset your CMOS like you did the first time. I can't believe no one else caught this, but powering on the system with the jumper switched is about the biggest no-no you can do. Most manufacturers warn against this in capital letters.

I really recommend people read the manual before resetting the CMOS nowadays as different manufacturers want it done differently. Used to be, they just wanted you to move the jumper to the other set of pins. Now a lot of them want it done in conjunction with removing the battery and unplugging the power cord.

And mechBgon isn't telling you that the CPU might not be compatible, he's telling you for certain that it isn't.:)

I thought that was wrong....

but i read it here in these forums in other messages about 4 or 5 times so i figured that i was not doing it correctly. should have listened to my techie spirit. anyway, i dont think that did anything because it never changed from the very beginning and i only did the cmos that way late in the game. thank you for clarifiing.

I have heard Machspeed has a lot of problems with thier motherboards. three local comp shops refuse to use them anymore as they were returning about 1 out of every 3. i here Gigabyte is one of the best....any opinions? before i get another bad MOBO.

Oooooh, that's a dangerous question here. You know the old saying, opinions are like a**holes, everybody has one!

I must say that I, personally have never heard of Machspeed. This in itself has no real value, but I thought I'd mention it.

Any of the big players are OK in my book. And that would include Gigabyte. I don't think you will go wrong with them.

I have built systems using;
Abit
Asus
ASRock
DFI
Intel
MSI
Shuttle
and probably others I can't remember.

Just make sure it supports your variant of Intel processor.
