putting independent or dependent on college application

Im applying to colleges and one of the questions asked, is if iam independent or dependent. the application says that the IRS considers dependent to mean that you are supported 50% or more by another indivudal. Im not sure what to put, and am confused. I live with my mom , I pay the phone bill(its in my name),i buy my own meals, pay for my own car payments, buy my own books, but Ive been using a prepaid college fund to pay for classes.

My mum says in order for me to dependent i have to display a different address then my mom.

Well, putting independant means the college doesn't factor in any money your mom might have into your financial aid/FAFSA

Course, if you lie the college and/or the IRS might get pissy

Does your mother claim you as a dependent on her tax return?

I misread and thought you were talking about dependency requirements for aid.
