putting fridge magnets on PC case

That should not be strong enough to erase data on the hd. try rubbing it on a cassette tape and playing it. I bet it wouldn't even erase a cassette.
 
thats a good idea. i didn't think of testing it like that 🙂

i have no idea what amount of energy is required to have any effect on a HDD, so i thought i'd ask as a precausion 🙂

Should be fine. HDs have some of the strongest magnets internal in the case, to move the heads, so I would think a dinky fridge magnet would be no prob.
