Putting computer into sleep state with an SSD, yes or no?

I heard it's not advisable for SSDs with those faulty Sandforce controllers, but if I have an M4 it should be safe right?

SandForce drives don't like sleep or hibernate, that is true.

Most other drives are fine with those sleep states.

No not everyone has updated their firmware. The old OG Sandforce chipsets have issues still. Intel fixes their firmware, many other oem's do not.

Stick to intel or crucial and you'll be pretty have with support. If you want trouble, try OCZ. Personal RMA numbers indicate high levels of <30 day issues with OCZ and 0 with Intel.

You never get fired (At work) for chosing Intel :)

That has been resolved for many months by the latest firmware IIRC.

Not entirely, I have a couple of Vertex2's that I recently updated to the latest firmware that is supposed to deal with the sleep issue - you guessed it, they still do not wake up. They are residing back in the closet again.

I have two M4's, two X25M's and a couple of the Kingston Toshiba based drives in the same system - they all work as they should.

I rarely boot with my 830 because sleep works so well, I really wouldn't get anything sandforce due to their poor handling of uncompressed data.

I started with an 80 Gb Intel G2 in Nov 2009 and later replaced it with a 120 Gb G2. Now also using a 120 Gb Samsung 830. Regularly put machine in sleep state or let it go there automatically, sometimes multiple times daily. Never a problem with G2's. 830 is no real problem but sometimes find machine woke itself up and sitting at log on screen. Not sure if this is related to 830 or something else. Does not seem to happen if I manually put it to sleep.

I regularly sleep my computers with SSDs. Hibernation on the other hand is pointless when a computer can fully boot in 15 seconds.

The thing with sleepmode is, that you have your work still on screen, browsers open, applications running and so on...
And yes, sleep mode works fine with Crucial M4.

Not true, one can take advantage of Wake-On-LAN to effectively allow remote power on of your system; sort of essential if you do not have physical access!

I have an Intel SSD G2 120GB and hibernate works just fine.........

I think it depends on the nand and controller. But I have a Chronos Deluxe (sandforce 2) with toggle NAND and it can sleep/hibernate. I had an Intel 320 that died (8mb bug with latest firmware) with sleep/hibernate over 5 months, I RMA'd it and it's relegated to a desktop so there is minimal sleep/hibernate and it's chugging along. Had a Vertex Plus couldn't even sleep/hibernate.

I have an intel 320 in a laptop and an m4 in my desktop. Sleep and hibernate work fine on both.

Don't use sleep mode with first gen 1 Sandforce ssds. My old corsair F115 used to blue screen every time on resume in all of my laptops. With latest firmware I tried it once and it seemed to work but I haven't bothered to test it. Now its in my media centre on 24/7.

Haven't had any issues with sleep on gen 2 Sandforce SSDs tho. Have Intel, Sandisk and kingmax branded ones and all of them resume fine.

I never use sleep or hibernate...even with Win 7. The few times I have used sleep (over multiple computers), there is usually a driver issue, like it won't see one of my hard drives. It gets annoying.

This is why I use an SSD in the first place...since boot is pretty quick, why bother with sleep/hibernate?

We have hit this with a hammer, 120000X times.

What is the final verdict ?

IMO and seeing how my dads sleep works on his 2600k SSD. It should be ok to use. Has any SSD company told us dont use sleep on their SSD ....... gl

OCZ specifically advised against sleeping their first gen Sandforce drives. I recently updated a couple of Vertex2's to their latest firmware that is supposed to correct the issue - as I stated earlier in this thread, mine still will not wake up from sleep mode.

I don't have this issue with any of my other SSD's, nor have I personally heard of anyone besides Sandforce having this issue. Quite a bit of information out there that I am not aware of though.

I don't have a 2nd gen Sandforce so I can't comment on those.

I don't use Sleep or Hibernate on my desktop. I crunch DC 24/7 in the background, so I have it set to "High Performance", and just let it roll.
