putting a pc in a car

I have been toying with the idea of putting a pc in my car to play mp3s and movie files. Here is the configuration i am looking at:

http://secure.newegg.com/app/WishList.asp?position=HISTORY&submit=VIEW&ID=457099

The computer is too big to fit in a standard din dash, so it would probably have to go under the passenger seat. The video out would be attached to an indash lcd TV. The operating system would be some version of linux (preferably one that boots up quickly). Input would be controlled by a remote--i believe there is a linux program that allows you to program certain remotes--or if neccesary a keyboard. I have a wireless network setup at home, so to easily transfer files i can attach the wireless network adapter and grab my mp3s and movies off my file server. In fact i am even thinking of just having no DVD rom, use files straight off the hard drive, and put the computer in the trunk. The power consumption of the pc is pretty low, and i already upgraded my alternator for my stereo system.

Here are some potential problems i see with this project:

- Rough Ride
Will the hard drive break down due to bumpy roads? I dont plan on going off-road with my car, but can a hard drive absorb the impact of speed bumps? I know kenwood had this thing a couple years ago called a music keg that stored 6gigs of mp3s in your trunk. I cant say for certain whether it was hard drive based but i am assuming it was for that size.

- Powering up/Powering down
I suppose i could somehow connect the power jumpers on the motherboard to the ignition switch. But then it would take a while to bootup and load up the media player program. And what happens when i turn off the car? Is it safe to just cut power to a pc?

- Little linux experience
I have used unix, but only out of neccesity and in a software development environment.

- heat

I figure the cost of the box would be $500 shipped, lcd is $300, so i spend about $800 to integrate a 1ghz machine in my car. A namebrand head unit that can play dvd/vcd/cd goes for nearly double this price, a seperated unit (dvd/cd/mp3 player in glovebox, flip down tv on roof) is about $800 from sony.

Just wondering on the feasibility of this project, all comments appreciated!

First let me start by saying it is a novel idea but udderly ridiculous. But to each his own.

NO. If the PC is attached to the floor or laying on the floor you are going to have major hardrive problems ASAP. A hard drive is a very sensitive piece of equipment and it's head is about 5 thousandths of an inch away from the disc when powered up. The only thing raising the arm/head is air from the rotation of the disc when it spins up. If the head touches the disc while it is spinning you will have bad sectors. Do it enough and your drive is a gonner. This will most certainly happen in a car.

Is it safe to just cut power to a pc?

No..and for several reasons. Namely the stress to electronic components and the rotation of the hard drive.

You have not even addressed the wide temperature variances you will experience as well. These variances should kill your equipment with condensation and expansion/retraction.

why not just buy a dvd player which can also play cds? you could burn cds using a normal computer and play em on the player. or perhaps an iPod hooked up to external speakers?

I can't see your wishlist...

I have an Epia M-10000, with a 40gb Maxtor 7200rpm drive.

My display is a Xenarc 700TS, 7" widescreen touchscreen, VGA input. I seriously suggest you get a VGA TFT, because trying to view text on a one with a composite input is next to impossible.

I have had computer in car for about 2 years now, and i've not had any problems with hard drives etc.

I suggest you search/read the MP3Car forums, there are lots of people there who are very knowledgeable, and you are sure to find answers to all your questions. I suggest you do a search there first 🙂

Confused

been thinking to do the same for a long time ...

how would i prevent teh computer from rebooting everytime i turned the car on/off?

I had doubts at first too! The theory of your doubts is true, however I have found that in practice, they can take quite a bit of shock!

I had an accident a couple of years back, lost control due to blown tyre, and slammed the rear wheel into a grass bank, sending the car spinning round about 120 degrees, up on 2 wheels at about 30 degrees, and bending the back axle. The PC was on at the time, (and still was when the car landed back on the ground!) and the hard drive still runs to this day!!
