putting a generic fcpga fan onto a geforce?

I just upgrade the family computer's fan to a golden orb and now I have an extra generic fgpga hsf. It's on of those plain square-ish $4 hsfs but it's almost 5 times the size of the hsf on my GeForce 1 DDR. The base of the heatsink is roughly 2x1.9 inches (5.1x5.0 cm) so it's wider than the geforce hsf. Would it matter if the hsf is bigger than the chip so that it hangs over? Also, the fan blades are cupped downwards toward the heatsink. That means that the fan blows into the heatsink, right? Should I reverse the fan? Thanks.

yes, i think you can attach it to the geforce, if you can find a way to do so. it may block one or two slots next to it, but if you have slots to spare, no problem with it. and as for the fan blowing onto the heatsink, leave it like that. some heatsinks are designed for air blowing on them, some are designed for air being sucked through them, and i'd just leave it be ;)

actually, i just had a thought. fc-pga heatsinks have an indentation at the base for the core, right? that may cause some problems when it comes to heat transfer because not all of the heatsink is touching. i could be wrong though

If you do go ahead with this let me know how it turns out. I just got a Geforce GTS2 that I was going to do the same to but I had trouble getting the stock HS off. It's epoxied on and I didn't want to force it. I would guess that yours is the same. I read that I could put it in the freezer for 20 min and then cut/pry it off with a straight razor or a scalpel but I wasn't making much headway so I quit.

Good luck.

Yes, the generic Geforce HS/Fans are just CRAP!!! I have an Asus V6600 Deluxe, and that thing ran at like 140-145F under full load. That is Very HOT! Soon after, I removed the stock HS/F, cut apart an old P2 HS and used most of it for the core, and the two side pieces I cut off for the Ram and now the thing runs at 128F. Oh, I also have a small 486 fan on the HS. So, I would give it a try if I were you.
