putting a core duo into a single core laptop?

Has anyone tried this, and or is there any reason this might NOT work?

I have 2 laptops, dell 9300 and a dell xps, both of which have pentium M 2ghz CPUs. I have noticed that both this processor and the core duo have the same number of pins. So I was wondering could I buy a core duo and just install it?

Sorry though, the 9300 and XPS M140 / M170 only take Pentium M's and Celeron M's. It's true that these chips are all 479 pin but the socket is a bit different. The old chipsets and boards don't support Yonah (Core Solo/Duo) so Intel has changed the keying to prevent people from sticking the wrong cpu in the wrong socket.

BTW you already have a P-M 2.0, which is near top of the line for your laptops! If you're feeling adventurous and you want your computer to run faster, you could get some cheap 400 bus 1.6, 1.7, or 1.8GHz chips and pinmod them to run at 2.13, 2.26, and 2.4 respectively in your system. The 1.6 pinmod should be very doable, but it may be pretty hard to get a 1.7 and 1.8 that pinmod and still run stably.
