Ok, so i had a 2.66 p4 chip in my PC, and certain events have taken place so that chip is now out of the picture. Now i took the 1.7 p4 chip from a old computer and and have inserted it in the mobo, they are the same socket types so i asumed it would be compatible. When i turn the computer on the fans and HDDs are spinning, but there is no display on the moniter and no system beeps. I have a SY-P4S-645DX DRAGON Ultra mobo and the 1.7 p4 is out of a old computer so i dont know much about it, i have a new PC now and i just want this one for storage. I have tried reseting the CMOS, if there is any light some one can shed on the situation it would be fantastic, or if someone can tell me this just will not work that would be great to. (i am sure its not a video card problem b/c i have tested it in another computer)

I belive the fsb of the 1.7 is 400 (according to dell website, b/c it is from an old dell dimension 8200) the mobo supports 400/533. Also the old chip was 533...

here is the link to the mobo i have.

here is a link to the dimension 8200 with this processor.

Thanks in advance!

if its not booting more then likely the cpu fsb and the motherboards are not the compatible

I am almost positive that the 1.7 chip has 400 FSB and I know for a fact the mobo supports 400. Is there any other possible problems?

Thanks so much.

The 1.7ghz chip is a williamette core, so theres a very good chance that it is incompatible with the motherboard.

Not it's not a very good chance it won't work, it just won't work period. I tried the exact same thing from the exact same computer and tried to put that chip in my gaming rig so I could over clock it but it didn't work. Willamante chips use different set of voltages so they don't work. Though you CAN put a northwood in that dell 8200 system and it will work but not the other way around..

There were still some motherboards, even with 800mhz FSB that still supported williametts, so thats why I said there's a good chance it won't work. Looking at the CPU support for the motherboard, it only lists maximums and not minimums, but I didn't see it say anywhere that it supported CPU's with the 180nm proccess, so thats why I said it was unlikely to work.

Thank you for your help guys, but i have a new question. Since this chip isnt going to work does any one know what the cheapest processor i can get that my mobo will support. I just want to use it for storage so speed isnt really a issue, thanks again for your help so far and thanks in advance for any future help!
