Vladimir Putin: gay people at Winter Olympics must 'leave children alone'

Russian president vows no discrimination but says gay people must observe law banning 'homosexual propaganda'

Vladimir Putin has said that gay people will be not be subjected to harassment at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, as long as they stay away from children.
Putin is currently in Sochi reviewing preparations for the Games, which begin in three weeks. During a meeting with some of the thousands of volunteers who will work during the Olympics, he was asked why their uniforms were rainbow coloured, given the recent Kremlin anti-gay initiatives.

I guess Putin isn't modern enough to openly encourage gay behavior. He's living in the Stone Age, right?

Don't like it? Don't go to Russia.

I may not agree with Russia's stance on it...but it's their country and their decision.

Sounds like he and many others in Russia didn't know about the rainbow thing, or perhaps felt the ring colors from the Olympic emblem was the popular context. Regardless, his warning is his way of saying, 'You want to visit for the games? Fine, but don't wear your sexuality on your sleeve and certainly don't get political about it while here.'

Lousy time of year to get arrested in Russia. Detained people sometimes have the misfortune of having to wait outside for long periods for "processing," or in unheated rooms. I think those bent on trying to treat Russia like it's a western democracy should bulk up on their Turtle Fur and healthcare coverage before making the trip.
The Russians are in a state of heightened paranoia about Chechens and other fun groups right now, gay people would be picking a hell of a time to poke at Putin IMO. Could get ugly.

As has been said already, their country = their laws. Don't like it = don't go.

The gay culture is getting louder and louder and spreading like a wildfire (sorry to use a bad pun). Not sure why.

Is it because we humans are getting more tolerant (highly doubt it) or are we getting more lenient sexually? Or some other reason? Or are we deluding ourselves into thinking that since we're sophisticated and all that, we must be very, very tolerant and support anything anyone does? And why do we care so much about these issues?

Putin is a politician so lets not take him too seriously.

misleading thread title, but this is not surprising due to the intent of the thread

Putin has said nothing new here if you've been paying attention. What they're actually doing is a different story. Yes it's outrageous he's seemingly comparing pedophilia and homosexuality, but it's just a convenient scapegoat to use as a means to justify their intended actions towards homosexuality in their country. Whether or not he actually believes there is a link there is sort of irrelevant in the end. Since there are always children around, there is always an excuse to deem something as violating their propaganda rule.

Not misleading at all. He was specifically threatening gays.

You must mean the intent of the NEWS ARTICLE, not the intent of the THREAD. I expressed no opinion on the matter, and just presented it as it was written, except for the title. Next time, read the entire link before going out on a limb and accusing me of some sort of intent.

The rest of your comments I have to basically agree with, so I don't understand the malicious intent of the first part of your mischaracterization of my post at all.

I guess that's because you're not gay, in Russia at the Olympics then. It's so good to know you're not threatened.

So should a gay wear something to make it obvious he's gay? Why must people always broadcast themselves to other people?

Just like the "epidemic" of teachers getting it on with students and teens, homosexuality is nothing new for our species.

It's just that homosexual people are becoming more visible now because, at least in some countries, society has reached the point of saying that it is not ok to murder someone for being gay.
Once you start saying, "We're not going to kill you because of who you are," then yes, people in that group are indeed going to come out of the shadows they'd previously been forced into by an oppressive society. They didn't just suddenly "become" that way because of some imagined "gay agenda." They were just fully aware that revealing a key part of who they were would easily mean a bottom-tier existence, or even death.

You'll also start to see them in oppressive societies more and more: Once they see other nations where gay people can live normal lives, they'll of course want to enjoy similar treatment right where they are.

I may not agree with Russia's stance on it...but it's their country and their decision.
I didn't much care for the "Love the USA or get out!" mentality that constantly shows up whenever someone decries the actions of our government. This is no different.
Progress isn't found by simply removing or displacing those with differing opinions. It leads to the stagnation of those who are stuck in a pool of identical thinking and behavior.

Yes, it's their country. But they are still people living there. People who want what we want: To be left alone to live out their lives in peace, as they see fit. Oppression still causes injury, regardless of which side of a government-drawn line in the dirt you're standing on.

If Russia don't like it, then don't host the Olympics. See how that works now? Why should a gay athlete have to feel being threatened or bullied by Putin or his people just to attend the Olympics there? Putin needs to keep his bigoted trap closed about this. There was absolutely no need for him to say anything at all about visiting gay athletes.

And just like loud mouth bigot Phil Robertson, since Putin has the media completely state controlled and at his disposal, he just can't resist the urge to stick his foot in his mouth.

Not to mention, Russia don't own the Olympics, they requested it, and were chosen to host it. And Putin is acting like a pretty rude host.

Oh, Putin is being a rude host? I can see it in the papers now, "Russian tyrant is actually a dick". Maybe that's too wordy though...

Srsly, what do you expect? He has run that country for decades, a country very well known for being a dick to its neighbors, its citizens, and anyone that has their own opinion on anything. The only reason the rest of the world deals with Russia at all is they're simply too big to ignore.

I wouldn't necessarily say he's run the country for decades...

Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin (Russian: Влади́мир Влади́мирович Пу́тин, IPA: [vɫɐˈdʲimʲɪr vɫɐˈdʲimʲɪrəvʲɪt͡ɕ ˈputʲɪn] ( listen), born 7 October 1952) is the fourth and current President of Russia, incumbent since 7 May 2012. He previously served as the second President from 2000 to 2008, and as Prime Minister of Russia from 1999 to 2000 and again from 2008 to 2012. During that last term (2008 to 2012) he was also the Chairman of the United Russia political party. In 2012 he was again elected President, this time for a six-year term expiring in 2018.

But your point is still valid.

Yeah I oversimplified, but Putin's opinion was always heard during Medvedev's presidency. He will probably be in power for the rest of his life, even if that power isn't always entirely official.

It's always the straight bigoted tyrants that do all the sexuality shoving to bully and repress gays from what I have seen in my life.

But by all means, I hope you continue to enjoy your stereotypical closeted homophobic fantasies like Putin obviously does, anyhow.

This. The stance on this is hypocritical at best. The US for example continues to maintain friendly ties with incredibly homophobic countries, and says nothing. So why Russia all of a sudden? You can't claim to believe in a human right while preaching it to one person and not the others.
