For a minute there, I thought the Russians were going to invade, which would be possibly the dumbest thing they could do.

It would probably cost them more to dispose of those old tanks than it will to give them to the NA. :)

Interesting....

Tanks do have some use in the area. Both NA & Taliban already have and use some. Taliban can't be happy. 40 tanks & 100 APCs to the NA is actually pretty sweet considering how pathetic both sides are when it comes to anything beyond an AK 47 and a rocket launcher.

I really am hoping the NA don't suck once they gain power.

nEoTeChMaN: It is better then nothing though. They still have some roads they can set them up over a valley to fire on front line of talibomb troops.

Yeah, all the Taliban have to wait is sit on a cliff arming with RPGs and wait for these tanks to go by. Tanks were death traps to many Russians during the war there in the 80s.

They an always be used as crude artillery... but they certainly won't be useless to these guys.

Aren't you relieved.;) I don't know about it being cheaper to get rid of those tanks. I believe it is a genuine gesture of solidarity and very meaningful to assist the Northern Allience, who where staunch and fierce enemies a decade ago. The entire story of what is going on is soooo good to hear. Now we need to send in B52's to carpet bomb the front lines at Kabul, Bandahar, Mazer h Sharif, and Haret. If we can secure landing sites inside Afghanistan (emphesis on secure) We can beat these Taliban A holes and feed the poor Afghans who have been mistreated and lied to for so long.

I sure wish I was 18 again.;)

Excellent point, the best use to tanks in Afghanistan is use them as self-propelled artillery pieces.

40 T-55 tanks and 100 other armored vehicles

Well, it's better than nothing, I suppose. M2s BFVs can take them out with APDS.

Of course, it's much better than what the Taliban have. Hope they run.

Actually, from what I've read the past few days, the Northern Alliances prefer Rocket launchers

Yea, if I was fighting in a mountain, just gimmie a handful of RPG-7's or RPG-16's...

RPGs rock, cheap, simple, and they made so damm many of them we'll have endless supplies of them for a hundred years...

Tanks can't go over rocking mountains.

But they sure are useful when surrounding a city like kabul. I think the Russians learned that tanks can't be used to chase people through the mountains, but I htink the Northern Alliance will find them very useful.

"Tanks can't go over rocking mountains."

The Romans said the same thing about Hannibal Barka, but he was able to bring more than 20 elephants to the gates of Rome itself.

The tanks are for the assault on Kabul.
Tanks were not supposed to be effective in Vietnam either, but what was the first thing you saw busting down the Palace Gates in Saigon after the NVA defeated the South?
They will be as siege weapons, and direct assaults on the city defenders. Russian T-55 tanks are ancient sure, but traditionally mobile and with a small cross section (ie hard to score a hit on)
Russians learned the hard way about tank warfare, but when they learned speed is essential in tanks for urban combat--they designed them well.
Like the Nazi's found out in Eastern Europe.
Even the Afghans in the 80's had no answer for the Soviets Tank-tactics in the cities.
This will help the NA in future IF....IF....they recieve the training on how to use them.

For those who think the RPG rules the battlefield, answer these two questions:

Which has the greater range, an RPG or the main gun of an MBT?
Which is more susceptible to small arms fire, the guy holding an RPG or someone locked inside an AFV?

The key to tank employment is the presence of friendly infantry to spot or to kill enemy infantry in support of the tank.
