Put yourself in my shoes

Here, I'm thinking of upgrading my system. It's about 1 & 1/2 year old. While I have no problem in everyday use, when I play games and do heavy photo-editing, I get some draggy feeling and I hate it. 😉

My current system.

Chipset: Intel I850E (MB- Gigabyte 8IHXP)
CPU: P4 2.26 (OC @ 2.38)
Memory: 512MB PC1066 RDRAM
Video: eVGA GeForce Ti4400
HD: 2 WD 800JD

I've read quite a few reviews and honestly don't see any reason to change the chipset to i875. (kudos to Rambus) Though some might think otherwise. (Please let me hear your voice) Should I upgrade the video card? In that case I'm thinking of 9800Pro or 5900U. Should I buy a new CPU? 3.06 is out of question because it's too expensive, and that leaves me 2.8GHz. Then my current system runs at around 2.4... would 0.4GHz be noticeably beneficial?

It's hard to set a priority for me and as you see, my financial situation doesn't allow a win-win scenario. (I.E. upgrade everything) What would you do if you were in my shoes?

P.S. I'm also getting a 21" LCD, so either in games or on desktop I'd like 1600x1200 resolution.

i wouldn't do anything for the time being. i mean, Athlon64 is right around the corner. at least see what it can do.

Have you tried overclocking your P4 2.26? It might be worth trying, some of them are pretty overclockable, especially if they're C1 stepping. Other than that, I would get more memory, followed by a faster video card.

well, he did state that it is overclocked to 2.38 😉

Whoa.. 3 replies from Diamond/Platinum members within 1 hour of posting! Seriously, thanks alot for your help.

Thanks for the suggestion but it seems way too much for me. To use Athlon I will need everything brand new (including the OS!) and that'll cost a lot, especially considering the premium for the new technology when it just comes out.

Goi, and shooters - I guess I should respect old member's opinions (which agree to each other) and buy a new vid card.

well, you can always sell your old stuff when the new stuff comes out. that's what i always do. besides, i wasn't necessarily saying buy an Athlon64. however, it's release is bound to bring about lower prices and new hardware from Intel. it is worth it to at least see what happens.

Ack! Didn't see that...maybe he could do more with a C1? Looks like maybe he doesn't have one though...oh well! =p

honestly, i would hold tight and make no upgrade. the ti 4400 is fine for the games out there right now, and Rambus is just too expensive. i would just save the money to make upgrades when HL2/Doom 3 comes out. i would go with a DDR board since DDR is so much cheaper than rambus AND it will help your OC. if you have a C1 stepping, you may get a lot better OC results with DDR which will save you a CPU upgrade

What OS are you running lopri? And when did the draggy feeling start? If you are running WinXP and this draggy feeling started in April then you might need to uninstall a critical update from M$ that they later pulled due to it ruining system performance. I can't remember what the patch number was but a search of the forums will find it. I'll do one right after I hit "Reply".

Edit: The patch is 811493. It is uninstallable too.

Just a note, you don't have to unistall it anymore. I had this "patch" on my system and it would sometimes take 10 seconds to open Windows Explorer. Anyway, I went to Windows Update last night and they had the same patch listed even though I already had it, so they have an updated version on there now. So far I think it's fixed.

But I don't know if this will cure you're problems since you say the sluggishness is when you're photo editing... but of course, this issue should be fixed too.

I knew they had the new patch up there, I have updated my system with it and all is well. But it seems to me that if you had the old patch installed that you'd have to uninstall it to install the new one... But then again we're talking M$ not real world logic right. 🙂

And he also says he gets the sluggishness when he is gaming. Seems to be a systemwide issue to me.

Right! I was all prepared to uninstall it first, but I figured I'd check out WU to see what it offered.

lopri: Are you still running on the original Windows install from 1 - 1 1/2 years ago? You would probably benefit from a reinstall. I can't really see how you'd benefit from "upgrading" anything, except *maybe* more ram, but I think even that's a stretch.
