I have issues sticking my fingers in my ears. I do it compulsively, and end up with ear infections. I have a mild one now in my right ear :^/

i occasionally use things other than q-tips if i feel ear wax and dont have access to q-tips.

never thought of it as an addictive behavior, and clean them off afterwards as best i'm able. (generally just my car keys)
