Push reel mowers

I'm seriously considering junking my lawn mower and buying a push reel mower. I have a city lot, and I'm tired of the noise and maintenance with a gas mower. I'm not opposed to some physical labor.

If you use one, how well do you find it works compared to a gas mower? How much harder is mowing? How often to find yourself mowing to keep it from getting to difficult to mow?

Some physical labour?

Yes they are a BITCH to use especially if you have a cheap one!

A good one with sharp blades will help tremendously. If you have hills it'll be a workout!

Better keep that snapper in the garage just in case. 🙂

No, no hills. A tiny, flat city lot. Maybe 1200sqft.

I'm looking at this Scotts 20in. model.

Yeah, I'm also tempted to get one with all the friggen noise pollution in the neighbourhood now. And they're going only about $150 (cnd) and Lee Valleys.

They're nice if you keep it sharp. You'll need to mow often, if the grass (or weeds) gets over 3 or 4 inches, the thing won't cut them. You'll need to do two passes (I criss cross, it seems to help), and it is quite a workout. I'm have an acre that I mow every 3 or 4 weeks and it wears me out.. It is nice, however, to not have the noise or the maintanance. I'm very happy with mine when I keep up with the mowing.
