Purpose of overscript / overtype?

The only reason I can think of using it is to not mess up the formatting of the document when entering text into a large space. That and when people feel the need to be old-fashioned.

Any ideas for practical use?

It is commonly used when a paper is being coordinated or "staffed" by several persons. It allows their druthers to be considered as possible changes.
