Purpose of Locking a Thread = Somewhat pointless ?

When a Mod locks a thread it attacts more attention.
Sure it goes away after awhile, but it definitely gets more attention than normal threads.
So what's the point of just locking the thread ?

Why not clear the post and lock the thread. Is clearing stuff that's posted initially against the rules/laws ?

Mods at time will remove an offending post within a decent thread.

Most locks occur when the thread subject is not tolerated by either the rules, common sense, good taste or is a good thread gone bad.

When I read it (almost ROFL but the chair arms kept me in place), I immediately thought of shooting a promo for it. Unfortunately, my actress is in drum corps all summer, so I just could not do the production work 😀

Edit to add pronouns where appropriate.
