NEW YORK - Democrats on Tuesday accused the GOP leadership of organizing a demonstration against candidate John Kerry?s war record, calling ?purple heart bandages? handed out by a convention delegate a slap at all veterans who have won the decoration.

"They insulted the United States of America, even though the president belatedly supported the combat record of John Kerry,? said Rep. Charles Rangel of New York, a military veteran himself.

Republican Chairman Ed Gillespie asked delegate Morton Blackwell of Arlington, Va., to quit handing out the bandages, which carried the message: ?It was just a self-inflicted scratch, but you see I got a Purple Heart for it.?

Support the troops, belittle their medals.

So one group insults those without brains, one group insults vets who got injured in combat. Same thing.

That was a subtle attempt at suggesting the delegates at the DNC didn't resort to such slimy measures -- there were no brain hats handed out that I know of. This purple heart thing is disgraceful, though. I imagine a lot of Purple Heart recipients will be angry and/or hurt by the lack of respect.

actually most vets such as myself think kerry and his glory hunting is the insult. that is why there is such an outcry against him FROM vets.

I don't call him a chimp. I call him the Chimp. Please! And I have no idea how Kerry won his medals, but I can see that Bush is the Chimp. Bush is also a tremendous disaster.

There's no comparison.

I saw the bandages on CNN's page this morning and was immediately disgusted and angry. Whoever thought of that idea/ approved it and was distributing those things need to be taken out back and the sh!t kicked out of them.

This is very low, but that's 90% of what politics is these days. Neither side wants to discuss issues, so they take cheap shots at each other. They might think this is some sort of cute inside joke, but I'd be willing to bet there are people who won't take kindly to it. Still, is this going to change anyone's vote? Hopefully not, though if it does, it will likely be to Kerry's benefit.

Being born gets you a brain.

Only being injured in combat gets you a Purple Heart.

So, on one hand, we have derision that has been earned by Bush for the way he has used his brain, and on the other, we have derision that attempts to belittle acts of valor. [sarcasm] Sure, same exact thing. [/sarcasm]

Attacking medals of anyone is below the belt. Did the DNC in 1996 make fun of Dole's self inflicted band-aid wound that he got a purple heart for? I hope not. Anyone that signs up for service and gets even a scratch is heads and tails above most of us.

Your not speaking for this vet.
It took courage to voulenteer and fight in viet nam. It took greater courage to take a stand against the political spineless asshole politicians that tried to keep the war going so to line pockets of their constituancy, at the peril of our nations solders and the destruction of South Viet Nam. If you can't remember that time period, then you will repeat it.

Ever hear of Kent State? 4 dead in Ohio? Then you would know why Kerry stood up to the war machinery.

I salute him for his courage, under real fire and the BS of the right wing radical pukes.

My son got a major slice on his head while in Iraq - 13 stitches or so.
He had gotten out/off the Hummer to check something out, maybe a leak,
and in his haste to get back to the vehicle - he didn't duck low enough under a tree,
and got a nasty gash from where the helmet rolled off & he stubbed his head.

No 'Purple Heart' for that though, as he said, "No medals for stupidity",
just the scar to prove it.

Support the Troops call them "Rapists... Killers... Criminals..." make there life Hell and stab them in the back when you get home and hear stories from people who were not even there. The few Vets I know would have died than say those words and many did in POW camps instead.

If Kerry didn't Report for Duty and declare himself a Hero this wouldn't be an issue.

If you do a little research you will see the Swiftboat ads were already being prepared before Kerry "reported for duty".
