PureVPN Really Slow vs Private Internet Access VPN

Hey Guys -

I've been a user of Private Internet Access (PIA) for over a year now and don't really have anything to complain about. Then I started reading how PIA was considered a lower tier VPN service compared to HideMyAss and PureVPN. They're always at the top of VPN speed charts so I decided to give PureVPN a try. Problem is, they're soooooooo slow. At least 4 times slower than PIA.

I'm basically testing PureVPN's open VPN udp using the fastest server in Canada option against PIA's Open VPN UDP Toronto Server. Is it just a matter of distance to the server considering I live in the Toronto area and PureVPN's closest server is in Montreal?

😀I like PIA, they offer great service. Speed is a tricky issue, more like hit and miss; besides measuring is not as easy as using Ookla. I have tested a bunch of VPN providers and even worked closely with some of them to test the actual speed. I learned a few things along the way, most importantly "don't trust any online speed testing tool!"

The best way to measure is to download a large file (we use Linux distributions) and then calculate the actual speed based on how long it took to download. Picky, I know 🙂

Have you tried IPVanish? They are a Tier-1 Network provider, hence own their network and no logs (in case you care!) You can find a good write up about them here: http://vpnverge.com/ipvanish/ I'd be interested in how they work out for you....

The VPN depends on the protocol used, TCP or UDP. UDP being fastest and the type of VPN. OpenVPN would be fastest and L2TP being second. Compression has a factor as well.
