Purevideo support on 6800 series?

Hi,
I changed my MPEG decoder from Dscaler to the nvidia's Purevideo3+ ones(with hardware acceleration checked), and I noticed that mpeg transport stream(.ts) playback cpu utilization dropped from 80-100%(for dscaler) to 10-30%(for purevideo). This surprised me since I was under the impression that my 6800GT AGP didn't have Purevideo support? I thought only a select few from the 6800 series(such as the NV41 based 6800 vanilla pci-e) and the 6600 series had full Purevideo support. Why does purevideo have such a dramatic effect on cpu utilization in my case?

From what I understand, it only works partially. MPEG2 is fine, and I think it was mostly WMV-HD that people had problems with...although now that Microsoft released a DxVA patch a few months back, we can at least play 1080p clips without dropping frames now (or at least that's my experience). I'm sure someone else will be able to explain this better than I can.

Cool, that explains it. However, even though I installed the dxva patch, I didn't see much of a difference in cpu utilization when playing WMV-HD trailers. I guess the dxva patch just enables hardware acceleration if you have it, and in the case of my 6800GT, I don't have WMV-HD acceleration?

Hardware vs Software. Dscaler is all CPU, while Nvidia DVD decoder supported software, like nStant Media, Theatrtek and WMP10 enable DXVA decoding support for MPEG accelration as well as Spatial-Temporal De-Interlacing, NTSC 3:2 Pulldown, NTSC 3:2 Bad Edit Correction, PAL 2:2 Pulldown, PAL 2:2 Bad Edit Correction hardware post processing.

For as bad as the rest of the news for NV40 and Purevideo, MPEG decoding is very nice.

For MPEG, you need to use NV DVD decoder in a purevideo supported software (WMP10 for instance) The Nvidia DVD property sheet gives you the decoding options.

Thanks guys. When I read that 6800 Purevideo support was broken, I just assumed that it was completely dysfunctional. It's nice to know that MPEG2 decoding is working, and working very well indeed. If only there's divx/xvid/mpeg4 decoding support too :)

I went on NV's site but it looks like I have to buy it. Is there a free version of this, or am I just doing something wrong?

Yes unfortunately you have to buy it even if you own an nvidia video card. You would think a $400 card comes with Purevideo software, go figure. There's a trial version though.

So existing Nvidia customers still have to pay - but what about new purchases? Will the Purevideo software be included on the CD with a new 6600GT (Gigabyte) or do I still have to buy Purevideo separately?

Everyone seems to think purevideo is broken or not even there.
Isnt WMV-HD the only problem that pure video had?

Think of it this way. ATi has Avivo, NV has pure video. And it works.
