A comparison of a similar DX class hardware graphics card not equiped the PVP using the same software might give you a decent idea. DXVA alone will reduce the cpu load using NV Decoders even on ATI hardware, and the shader pipeline working to decode video will heat up the VPU without using the PVP as well.

id imagine thats whats happening, ill try it on my firends 9550 when hes not busy, but to offer a universal hardware acceleration must involve the pixel pipelines and not the PVP. WinDVD doesnt do anything for DivX, but Ati have the ability to post process DivX media...i miss my 9500Pro!

Thats true. Interestingly it also requres driver support and supported software Divx Player.

Hardware Acceleration with Advanced Video Cards
The DivX Player supports hardware accelerated video post-processing with selected video hardware. Applying post-processing to DivX videos using ATI's FULLSTREAM? technology (included in the line of ATI video cards) will increase post-processing speed and drop CPU usage up to 20%.

Which makes me wonder how much of Purevideo relies on the shader pipeline, and how much it relies on the Programmable Video Processor with the affected 6800 cards (or the other cards going forward for that matter) I know that enabling Hardware acceleration using NV DVD decoders significantly reduces the CPU load using my AIW card.

Alright, I guess I'll go do that then. Thanks. I have tried two drivers, 66.93 and 67.66. 66.93 worked, and I assume everything lower than 67.66 will.

Question: Is this a place to discuss PureVideo (not my tuner issue), or just a place to suggest additions/edits to the FAQ?

Also, is there any way to invoke the nVidia DVD Decoder other than inserting a DVD (I don't have a DVD-ROM). Will playing an MPEG-2 encoded file work?

I finally got the control panel up. However, when playing my MPEG2 file, I notice no decrease in CPU usage (still around 35%). I'm going to make a media player that will force usage of the nVidia DVD decoder for any media supported, for debugging purposes. I'll post a link here either later today or tomorrow when I finish it.

For those interested, here are some more hidden options I discovered about the nVidia DVD decoder with GraphEdit.

Are you using WMP10? Unchecking/checking Hardware acceleration makes no difference? What decoder format is showing?

I am using Zoom player (DirectShow). Nope, unchecking/checking hardware acceleration doesn't make a difference. Decoder format:

DirectX VA mode A (idct)
Video mixing (DirectX 9)

Update: I noticed that ffdshow audio decoder is being used. Let me unregister that and report back to you.

What format does it show when you uncheck hardware acceleration? What happens when you use WMP10?

Windows Media Player's graph looked just like the one I hand-crafted in GraphEdit, with a few equalizing filters (WM SRSwow, etc.). Here is what my graph looked like and the CPU used, in hardware acceleration and no acceleration:

With hardware acceleration
No hardware acceleration

I guess it's a little faster, but not by much. It's probably within the margin of error. I couldn't print screen at the precise spot in video both times, but I tried my best.

OK, I see now. You need to uncheck hardware acceleration and restart the application. You can see you are using DXVA in both cases for you decoder format. Decoder format should show something lke Software Mode YUY2 Video Mixing (thats with my AIW rig, but it should be similar...my 6800 rig is down at the moment so I can't test with it)

After I restart, it says Software Mode YUY2 and the CPU is at about 27-30% instead of 19-22%. It seems DXVA/PureVideo? is actually functioning with hardware acceleration. Thanks.

The 7x.xx drivers all do not seem to have this enabled. I just get a black screen using DXVA.

The 67.66 work well for me so far. I have only played FarCry and KOTOR so I don't know if there are any HL2 issues or not.

I'm thinking there are political reasons involved. The mods have worked to bury this issue and stickying this thread would be counterproductive to that end. Why, though, I don't know.

I suppose it would help if I actually PM'd a Mod and requested a sticky eh?
