Any advantage to the software? I'm not even sure of what it is... does it just play/decode dvds on Media Player?

Pure video is great. It does enhance video playback. I mostly use it to play DVD movies or HD contents.
I use Theatertek to play DVD movies. It had purevideo build in.

It decodes and provides Hardware Deinterlacing and Hardware Video Acceleration support. You need the software from Nvidia in order to use your on chip VPU.

I bought the cheapest version of the software and I have to say that it does make a pretty noticeable difference. I run it on my Home Theater PC with a 6600 from MSI (non-GT) and it really makes 4:3 TV smoth and crisp. I'm not sure about HD as I've never tried it, but I assume the results are even more compelling.

Sorry for the OT :)

Works great with my ATi x1900GT, x850 and x800.
When used with DVB-S card, HDTV CPU resources drop almost in half compared to other codecs.

Full list of capabilities and support for them The 8 series is the best overall for multimedia, just as it is with gaming, and some decoding evidently improves with clockspeed on some cards.

Is it better than just using WinDVD or PowerDVD?
That depends on how old the version you have is-
PureVideo?s MPEG-2 decode acceleration and post-processing effects are available through the Microsoft DirectX VA application programming interface (API). It can be experienced with DirextX VA compatible video applications such as InterVideo WinDVD, and CyberLink PowerDVD
Nero too.
