I don't see people chatting about this game as much as I think they should so I figured I would write up a quick first impression for those that might be interested in an arcade off-road racer.
Pure is the lovechild of Motor Storm (PS3), Excite Truck (Wii) and SSX (multi) if they had hooked up for a Ménage' toi. In short--it's a trick based, ATV off-road racer--and it kicks lots of ass!
In Pure, tricks are pulled of by jumping your ATV off of ramps (which takes many forms in the game). The trick system is structured in teir form that hase buttons corresponding to those different tiers. For instance on the X360 the tier progression goes A--> B--> Y--> LB+RB. To progress through these tiers you must increase your boost and that is done (surprise!) pulling off tricks. Confused? Ok, that's the theory but let me give a real world example. Keep in mind that this will sound much more complex than it really is.
In the game, when approaching a jump, you will pull down on the left stick to "preload" a trick, as you hit the lip of the jump--you will quickly press up on the left stick, hit a trick button (A,B, Y or LB+RB) and press let, right, up or down to perform a trick. Again--it's much easier than it sounds. Once you increase your boost (X) to the teir 4 tricks (LB+RB) and successfully pull of a trick--you will rewarded with a refill of the boost meter.
There are several different racing disciplines--Race, Sprint (short-track raceS) and Freestyle (compete for points instead of placement).
As you progress you will unlock lame stuff like different types of clothes, paints and people--but more importantly stuff like upgraded parts that you can apply to your ATV will appear. You can assemble parts and build an ATV from scratch if you like or use the quick build button that will (sureally) build your machine very quickly as you mash the button--it's real meta.
There are 12 different locations with several tracks, 50 unique event types, 22 ATV components and 15 player MP.
The game is really great looking! ATVs will cut into the mud, throwing it up all over you and your competitors--much like Motor Storm. all supported by a solid frame rate and visible tearing. The tracks vary in theme, design and (so far) and been well thought out. Some of the jumps reach that toe-curling-Excite-Truck-height of OMFG (!), where you feel like you're never going to land and if you do--you could die form the impact.
I've put 2-3 hours into the game, played it on the X360 and PS3 and encourage everyone to, at the very least, download the demo.
Oh, one final note--the game has fast load times, for instance restarting a race is instantaneous, crashing doesn't include a 25 second cutscene involving a Valkrye (joke--I enjoyed Too Human), and the menu system is quick.
GO CHECK THIS GAME OUT--it's really freak'n fun!
