Just had a new build- E8400, EP45-DS3L and 4870 512mb. Haven't got my HSF yet and it ran Fallout 3 Ultra high and AA, with no hiccups at stock speeds and just inbuilt conservative ATI overclock. It didn't struggle pulling textures at all and I'm convinced 512mb for graphics card will be sufficient for next 2 years with no new technologies being able to see upgrades in games graphics on the horizon.

Silent, it depends on the resolution you play at. Right now, my 8800gts 320mb is right about cutting it at 1680*1050, but theres instances it will run out of vram, especially when I start using AA. For 1920*1200 I think 512mb is the lower limit. But since I'm sticking to 1680*1050 for a good longer while, I'm confident 512mb will be just fine.
