Purchasing Pre-Vista, A smart move?

Greetings all, as we all know with the expected launching of Vista next year,requirements for Pc's are going to be take a huge leap.As plainly as the title has stated,is it indeed a smart move to purchase pc pre-vista(roughtly late october or early november)?

i was looking to purchase a new gaming rig with the similiar specs below :

C2D E6600
Gigabyte 965P DS3
ram=suggestions?(2gb)
VGA=EVGA 7900GT KO (500/1500)
PSU=Cooler Master 550 watts
HDD=WD 250gb SATA2 16mb

so i take the plunge or wait ?

wouldnt it take companies some time to produce software and games to be fully optimized for vista?

relative feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Swaye

Yes it would, but since some of that development is underway at the moment it's not that great a point.

I'm sticking with XP for the forseable future, the only reason i can see myself upgrading to Vista rather than linux is DX10 for gaming (Not needed for 1-2 years imo) or HDCP (if it's ever implemented and i get a monitor that can handle it).

MS isn't getting more of my money for a while yet.

Wait for Vista and build a new computer all the way for me! I do not care how crappy it is going to be ethier! haha :laugh:

I say that because I can not justify another computer purchase for another two to three years :frown:

Looking at those specs the only thing that would really need upgraded later is a DX10 graphics card when it comes out. Other than that it looks good so I say go ahead and get it. Definitely 2GB of RAM though, any less and you'd be insulting the rest of the computer 😉

hahaha i thought so too... i was thinking if iwas to make an upgrade later would either be at the end of 07 with a DX10 card... i've not really seen screenies about what 7900gt can do... my last i had an upgrade was bout when dodo's still roamed the earth so... hahaha but with what i'm seeing i'm hoping this system can handle Oblivion,hellgate:london,Medieval 2 :total war etc etc with mid-high settings with decent resolution...

question :

how's the Corsair XMS ddr2 PC6400 modules? the price is not very reasonable but iw as thinking bout switching to Value ram? is that a smart move? would over clocking shorten their life expectancy?

Go for it. A new graphics card next year is the only thing you might possibly need to game on DX10. I doubt it will even be worth upgrading over a 7900GT for a good 12-18 months - maybe more.

By then you'll want a better graphics card anyway.

I wouldn't worry about Vista - any good card today can do what Vista needs. It's the DX10 games, and those will be some time coming yet. Certainly nothing worth waiting for.

hmmm been a long while since the last upgrade.. this is going to be a well needed one.. cheers mates.. thanks for the replies..

unfortunately i just got a quote on the MSI rx1900xtx it's out of budget..around $400 us dollars out of my budget... and about the ram i'll put in more ram when i really need it.. right now i have a budget to fall under...

Dont bother with the XTX, just get a X1900XT and OC to XTX speeds. I actually just did an almost identical purchase as you:

E6600
X1900XT
2 GB Corsair XMS DDR2 800
WD 250gb SATA2 16mb
OCZ PSU

unfortunately I got that MSI board thats everyones been complaining about. I haven't had any problems with it yet, though, so *crosses fingers*

EDIT:
And welcome to the boards!

Thanks mate... i've actually been cracking my head trying to figure out what to get... cause honestly the pricing where i'm at (malaysia) sucks quite alot actually... the x1900xt's are not available cause they dont stock em... and the price of the Xtx is insane...

I'm looking to play games like Oblivion,Medieval 2 :TW,Gothic 3 .... and hopefully Company of heroes,hellgate : london with mid-high settings on decent resolutions (nothing out of this world probably 1280X768or800).

Do you think i can handle the above mentioned games in those settings with the 7900gt?
