Purchasing PC Parts

Are there any differences from purchasing a CPU Kit or Barebones system, rather than buying everything separately from different sites?

This will be my first custom PC, and I just want the crucial things put together w/o screwing something up 😱. I thought maybe, a CPU Kit/ Barebones system could give me a good start/foundation...then I finish from there.

I was looking at this CPU Kit at GamePC.com:

AMD "Thunderbird" Athlon-C 1400MHz Socket-A OEM CPU - $205
Taisol CGK760092 Cooler for Socket-A / 370 - $35
ASUS A7M266 AMD 760 - $220
Thermaltake Blue Orb Chipset Cooler - $16
Standard 1 Year Parts and 3 Years Labor Warranty Included Free - $0
Assembly with 24 hour testing - $70
Total: $546.00 w/o S&H

Is this more expensive than buying everything separate? Is Assembly and 24hr testing really necessary? Or should I purchase elsewhere?

Help me decide, Thanks! 😀

BTW: Any comments/experiences w/ GamePC.com?

You are paying a little much for those pieces. You can build it yourself, it's really not that difficult.

Hrm... I would advise you to buy individual parts and assemble it yourself.

Newegg.com and Mwave.com are companies that offer great prices.

Kits don't have much point. Buy it all seperate and do it yourself (save $$) or have someone else do it all (can be better qual, no worries of crushed cores or such).

Someday my website will work 😉

Thanks for the caution...I was just mainly afraid of getting all these parts and having some compatibility/performance problems and worse.

What are other the top sites most people would purchase PC stuff from?
NewEgg, Mwave, etc??

You might want to get RAM from Crucial. However, there are several sites out there that offer good ram at low prices. Also, you might want to get your monitor from somewhere else besides those two companies. EMScomputing.com has low prices on many monitors. You can also check out the ever so popular Hot Deals forum to scope out the latest steals on computer components and much more...

And if you ever have any compatibility issues or questions, just post your intended system components here. I'm sure a few Anandtechers will help answer your question(s) and offer some quality input.

I'm wanting to build a BLACK system...
I've already found a case, SX1030B.
Black floppy is easy.

Are there BLACK versions of the following:
Plextor Plexwriter
19" Viewsonic or NEC monitors w/ flat screens

Again, Thanks! I appreciate all of your input.
