Purchasing New Monitor

I'm coming off of a 21'' Sony Trinitron E540 CRT. While I'd love to continue using this montior, it's become unsharp over the years and is throwing green diagonal lines. I mainly game and sometimes watch video. My big question is, should I go LCD or should I stay CRT?

With a price range of $300 and the love for big platforms ( 19in + ) what would you reccomend in the way of LCD if that's what you choose and what would you reccomend in the way of CRT if that's what you choose.

- I did take a look at the LCD buyer's guide and I only saw one selection that fit me and it was this:

19": Samsung SyncMaster 940BF 1280x1024 (5:4)

Panel: Samsung LTM190EX (TN 6-bit+FRC)
Response time (g2g/measured): 4 ms. / Response Time/Overshoot (X-Bit Labs)
Specs: Samsung SyncMaster 940BF
Notes: Fastest LCD in the world: 0~7 ms. actual. RTC (overdrive) can be disabled in the OSD.
Price: ~$270 USD

But alas, reccomend away and let me know why it's the choice to make.

Wow, that's ridiculous. Pretty interesting to look at. Nobody addresses this sort of thing. My friend has an 8ms BenQ and says that he hates it because its laggy. I didn't get to see or play on it but I'm guessing that this is exactly what is making it laggy.

NEC 90GX2.

Reviews don't do it justice.

You need to go into a store, & check it out side by side other displays to understand why i love it.

Lag noticable? how can you see lag? unless you run a CRT side by side you'll probably never know it's there. Just go for what is the best image quality and specs in your pricerange.

I just picked that monitor up today. it looks absolutely brilliant. Oblivion looks incredible. Way better than on my CRT.

I really am disappointed I'm going to have to go back to my 17" CRT after using this. If CRTs are better for gaming, I sure can't tell. This is my first experience with a high quality LCD and I must say I am impressed!

Once you go LCD there is no going back IMO. Whatever your size preference is LCDs are just sweet. Even if the performance and quality were the same between a LCD and a CRT I'd still choose a LCD simply because it takes up less desk real estate and its not as heavy. LCDs are certainly more stylish in looks now compared to CRTs too.

overdrive panels......

Interesting thread. I just went from a 21" Trinitron CRT to a Dell 2405 FPW a few months ago and haven't really noticed any input lag. The one thing that does irritate me has been screen tearing when v-sync is off, it never used to bother me with the CRT but I find it more distracting with the 2405 for some reason. It seems more noticable and happens more often. I vote for a quality LCD.

You're pretty much stuck with LCDs these days, as the good CRTs are all long gone unless you are willing to try your luck (and you'll need it, given how many defective ones there are out there :p) with a used or refurb one. If your existing monitor has any holes on the side, you should be able to adjust the focus with a screwdriver, although the green lines probably indicate that it's messed up for good.

I can give another vote for the 90GX2 though. I have one and the coating puts it in an entirely different class from normal LCDs IMO. It does have some flaws, but I still think it's the best one at that pricepoint for general usage.

It's probably the difference in refresh rates. The CRT likely ran at 85hz or more while the LCD runs at 60hz and the framerate goes over 60 much more often than 85.

VX2025wm is the sweet spot for 20.1in WS monitors. If you do get a monitor, go for a widescreen. (none of that 19in crap, 20.1in+ only).

And you won't notice input lag. the only thing you'll notice is ghosting and you probably won't even see that either (i can't even if I try on my VX2025).

I agree, don't bother with a 19" these days, unless you get a really good deal, or need 2 ms response time. $300 should get you near the price of the Viewsonic VX2025 widescreen, with a decent MVA panel.

I purchased my 20" Viewsonic (in my sig) for $209 at NewEgg after rebate. It's huge, and will be the closest thing to your existing CRT (although a little bigger, but same 4:3 ratio). I'm very happy with it, a lot of LCD for the money, but its a TN panel, so not the best viewing angles.

Costco is supposed to have a 22" widescreen LCD coming out for $350. It will ne this model here:

I'm not sure when they will have it, though.

I love my 24" widescreen Dell 2405FPW LCD. I use it for gaming, DVDs, and content creation. It was my second LCD... the first was the HP 24"... went through three in a row, all with massive stuck pixel problems. The Dell had none.
Pretty much all the GOOD CRT manufacturers have stopped making them, and now only do LCDs. CRTs are a dying breed.

IMHO they are not, the CRT is better(except for geomerty), and as for the weight, my desk hasn't complained yet :)

anyway, i'm enjoying the best of both worlds. 19 in vewsonic I got used from a friend for $60 so he could go LCD. My second monitor in dual dvi mode is a 17" LCD for browsing and other desktop stuff while gaming.

My email/office pc is an LCD, so i enjoy an LCD where it excels, but as long as i can continue to find a decent CRT(for gaming) at a good price i'm going to stick with them, at least until we see if OLED and SLED technologies are better then this current batch of crap (LCD, DLP, plasma - i cant due pixellation on detailed surfaces[tweed, basketball court floor, crowd movement etc.. ].. drives me nuts). pure digital doesn't do everything the best.

WOW

I am a hard core gamer and I bought a 8 ms LCD a year ago when my trusty CRT died. When I first started using it felt just laggy but I figured it was all in my mind. For the next month or so I was a lot worse at the games I normally was good at. I bought another CRT and when I had them hooked up at the same time, and I could easily switch gaming back and forth, I immediately noticed the lag. I told all my buddies about it and they all called me an idiot. Now I have proof that I was right :)

P.S. - I guess I am going to buy a few brand new CRTs so that I can use them for the next 10-15 years for competitive gaming.

Does it have a perfect flat screen like advertised or is it curved behind a flat glass panel?
