Purchasing laptop in foreign country, good/bad idea?

I'm here in Hong Kong for vacation and I'm thinking of buying this laptop for my girlfriend, She is in Optometry school and will be off on her rotations soon. She needs a laptop for papers, e-mail, study slides and of course, surfing the web.

It basically looks like this model LT70H which is newer and a bit faster with a 1.1 vs 1.0 processor and 256MB more ram, 20GB more HD, plus a fingerprint ID thingy but has the exact same chassis.

Now is was wondering if anyone had any experiences with buying foreign electronics? It comes with a 1 year international warranty from Fujitsu but I don't know what happens after that one year.

I will only be paying around $1700US which is much cheaper than that website but, i'm not sure if I can get it elsewhere in the states for around this much and have a longer or US based warranty.

What do you guys think?

dunno, my experience of living in different countries tells me otherwise : computer hardware is always cheaper in the US, maybe except for computer cases and such.

Very bad idea. Warranty will be impossible to claim.

I can't claim Canadian warranties in the States with companies that have an American presense.

No way in hell any company will support warranties on something bought in HK.

If you don't care about the Warranty, then price is the master.

I bought a Fujitsu P-2040 in Hong Kong in 2001. It's worked great, the only thing you need to be aware of (apart from obviously getting an English copy of OS if you need it) is that TV-out will be PAL. You'll need a converter to get NTSC and view on a TV from North America. PM me any specific questions you might have.

PENG DI LA!

Wrong. They know they have an international market. My laptop came with a 1 year International Warranty. Make sure you fill out the cards while you're in HK though.

You should be able to find what you need here, decent notebooks go on sale in the $600.00 to $900.00 range all the time.

lol, obviously you can get a decent laptop here... the point is he wants the one he can get there, and has/had some doubts.
