Purchasing iBook G4 12"

You've probably seen before I've been trying to trade in my windows laptop and trying to get ahold of a powerbook/ibook G4 12". Well, after working a few extra hours at work every week and selling a bunch of stuff I didn't need at home, I will be able to buy the laptop in January. Plus, I think the new Intel one's come out, which should make prices drop a little bit.

No, I will not be buying an Intel one.

Anyways, I am looking to replace the 4200rpm hard drive that comes with the iBook with one from hitatchi(sp?) Supposedly their supposed to be excellent hard drives. I read some reviews on TomsHardware and it looks good to me. Any personal experiences here?

Looking for something that will be worth my money. Saving up an extra $250 for hard drive/ram upgrades once I get the iBook. The cheapest/fastest hard drive I can get would be better, so I can add more ram(heard ram benefits more an macs...especailly 512mb and up.)

TIA!!!

Wow. That looked like a lot of work. I mean, I don't mind something like that, but it's definetely something I may just put off and save up the cash to take it to best buy or something.

I think as long as I have applecare I can take it to someone certified and they should be able to do it.

Bookmarked for later though. Best guide I've seen yet. I will go over this again and again to think about it. It could be a good experience for me, but then again I could always risk voiding my warranty and messing up a brand new iBook huh? ^^;

One more thing is that if you're looking for an easy way to improve hard disc performance on an iBook/PowerBook/Mac Mini - the quickest and easiest way is to boot off an external Firewire Drive.

You could even boot off a bus powered 7200 RPM 2.5" firewire drive since all Macs come with the full 6-pin powered 1394 ports, so you wouldn't have to have a power brick to deal with. You will, however if you're using a 3.5" external firewire drive though.

Don't overspend on the iBook - Amazon's had the 12" for $771 AR with a free printer and free Mighty Mouse. Now it's up to $871, but the price fluctuates.

Dude, my friend's iBook G4's hard drive died about 3 months ago, so instead of going out and installing a new one myself, I bought a hard drive from CompUSA, and paid them $30 to install it. May not be the cheapeest way, but they have certified Apple techs there, and I don't wanna risk breaking my laptop :thumbsup:

If you have (or are getting) the previous G4 iBook with out Bluetooth and are going to do this procedure, you may as well add Bluetooth as well. There's a guide out there somewhere. Google isn't cooperating...
