Purchasing Fireworks out of State

I'm thinking about going to one of my neighboring states (Wisconsin or South Dakota) sometime this month to get some fireworks. Nothing spectacular, just some rockets and other miscellaneous stuff that is currently not legal in my state (spare your breath if you want to preach about it being illegal). So my understanding is this, in South Dakota residents of the state CANNOT buy fireworks, but people out of state CAN? Sounds ass-backwards to me, but that's what i heard. I'm not too sure what Wisconsin's laws are. I'd just like to go Wisconsin/South Dakota and get a few fireworks.. Anyone familiar with the process?

- Thanks

I'm in Minneapolis, MN and would be driving to a place in Wisconsin (approx 1 hour) or South Dakota (approx 4 hours). No doubt, i can't wait to get my hands on some fireworks again! It's going to be insanity all over again!

I have done this sort of thing many times in PA and OH. I am from NJ myself so here is what happens:

You go there, buy what you want, and they make you fill out this little federal form that says you are going to be taking them out of state and into a state where they are legal in 48 hours. The people who sell them to you don't give a damn what you are really going to do with them as long as you have an out of state license to show them. You fill out part of the form, they fill out another part, and off you are on your merry way to blow things up.

Enjoy.

You know, Transition, that's illegal. You probably shouldn't do that.

Of course, it was illegal to commit treason against the throne of Britain, and that's what we're celebrating, so...

pics?

Hmm...went to south carolina, they didnt check ids make us fill out any forms or anything..they even let my little brother by fireworks all by himself..and this was a large outlet. In PA, they didnt check ID or anything, but they had us fill out this form that they had to stick to the fireworks package incase they were to go off in the car or something silly like that.

That makes no sense.
The owners in PA know damn well that this stuff is illegal in NJ.
Just another level of beauracracy and BS and more government employees to push papers around.

I would highly suggest going around 20 or 30 miles into the state that you would be buying the fireworks from, as I have noticed that the cops will watch the stands that are right on the border or within a few mile of the border pretty closely, trying to keep people from taking them back to a state where they are illegal.

here in florida i think they're illegal, yet we got like 2 shops that sell them..

one is Neptune in Dania Beach, they have everything.. (bought about $200 worth a week ago).. you have to sign a paper saying what you're going to use them for and let them copy your ID..but otherwise..

Don't know about South Dakota, but here is how it works in Wisconsin.

Many types of fireworks are legal in Wisconsin, however, anything that can 'blow up' or 'go up' is illegal.
There are many loopholes in the law however. Many fireworks stands only sell things that are legal in Wisconsin. Some will sell things that 'blow up' or 'go up' to anyone over 18 who possesses an out of state ID and who sign an affadavit stating that they are taking them out of state. Some other retailers will sell the prohibited items to Wisconsin residents if they pay $2 to join the "Wisconsin Pyrotechnics Safety Association". By state laws, certain associations are allowed to purchase the prohibited items. While the law was meant for municipalities and other organizations doing a public display, at least one court case has upheld the legality of the stores selling the items to 'association' members. (under appeal)

Anyway, just be careful. I remember a while back the state cops and local deputies lined up at the state line nabbing people bringing the fireworks into Minnesota. Don't know if they still do that.

Gotta love Minnesota, the state where anything fun is outlawed, including sparklers.
