Hey everyone. I've recently decided to purchase a new notebook due to the fact my old one is about a decade old. However, I'm not well acquainted with all the new hardware (sure, I know what's better than another, but I'm not very economical). My friend told me that he came here a few months ago and everyone was extremely helpful and educated when he was getting a new PC.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone could help me come up with a good computer (budget of $2400) that can I play games on (new ones, but not perfect quality or anything), complete schoolwork, watch movies, etc. Just basically, a jack-of-all-trades? Nothing ridiculously amazing. I was looking at the Sony VAIO AR series, and I felt like the prices were a little crazy. I would like a notebook that is Windows Vista ready, however.

If I could get any specs, advice, or anything in general, I'd appreciate it. Thanks all.

For $2400? You could get a really great laptop. For that price you'd be looking for a laptop with:

Core 2 Duo processor
2x1GB DDR2 RAM
nVidia GeForce 7700/ATI MR 1700 minimum
15"-17" LCD panel

Don't buy the Sony Vaios, they're overpriced and don't have good graphics cards...

I hear ASUS makes some good laptops...

what size laptop are you looking for? if you're looking for a 15", your selection will be more limited but there's still some laptops to choose from. at 17" you'll have more laptops but less portability.

is there a reason you'd like to spend all $2400? also, what games were u considering playing?

Acer has some quality stuff. Check out the TravelMate and Ferrari Series

Also, I played Rise of Legends on this machine with full graphics at 1280x1024 (using an external monitor). No lag at all. It was about ~$2000 when I bought it (August) but the price has probably come down since.
