Purchasing a SSD, but should I wait?

For the last few weeks I've been saving up to purchase a solid state drive, from the research I was conducting, I hear that the Crucial M4 or OCZ Vertex 3 is the way to go. I don't think I can afford Intel, it's just far too much money per GB, as reliable as it is. Now originally, I planned on buying the Samsung 470 (actually ordered it and they told me afterwards it was out) but I heard really good thing about the Samsung 830, so should I wait?

The ideal size I want to get is 512gb, as I'm currently using a 500gb Seagate Momentus 7200 (not the SSD Hybrid), but they seem to be outrageously expensive. Which is one of the reasons as to why I am more than happy to settle for the 256gb, in fact I did end up settling but due to unforeseen circumstances, I cannot get it. So my question is should I wait for the Samsung 830? Does anyone know when it will come out?

My laptop configuration:
Here are my laptop specifications:
Dell Inspiron 1520 | Midnight Blue
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.5 GHz, 6MB L2 Cache
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium (x64)
Hard Drive: Seagate Momentus SATA 500GB @ 7200 RPM (Not Hybrid)
BIOS: Dell Inc. 07/11/2008
Memory (RAM): 6GB
Video Card: 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
Network: Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card

Thanks for assisting me!

I would pay the tiny .06 cent per GB premium and buy one of the XT drives in a heartbeat.

i read it as he currently has a 500 GB HDD and wants to replace it with a ~500 GB SSD but finds a 512 GB drive outrageously expensive.

dude is poor give him a break. man can have dreams 🙂

i tend to get keep the ssd cheap AS or cheaper than laptop. ie 128gb in macbook air

Get a 128GB SSD from either Crucial(C300 or M4) or Intel and also purchase a 2.5" external USB 2.0 enclosure. Replace the HDD with the SSD and install the OS and APPs only to it. Put the HDD in the external enclosure and use it as a storage/music drive when needed.

I agree with this. I'd lean slightly towards the M4 newer generation. However, it will still be by far the most expensive component of the laptop.

It is more likely the most expensive component of a laptop, but unlike other parts in a laptop is also very usable in your next laptop.

the 830 is due out this month, but as of yet nobody has it listed on their website, even to pre-order. this makes me believe that etailers don't have a confirmed date of arrival yet.

Slightly out of the loop here, but since when is OCZ the way to go? Have they magically gotten better, in lets say the last month?

ummm.. maybe when it works for "most" out there?

I'm not going to go off on a fanboy fit here.. but do any of the haters ever think that seeing several hundred(even thousands) of issues out of tens of thousands(SF-2281) or Millions(all Sandforce controlled and Indlinx drives sold from all mfgrs)... might just be a drop in the bucket?

Do they also realize that OCZ actually outsells some of those mfgrs 4 to 1? And if that's the case.. could it actually be a percentage thing? lol

wanna bet? I got 15 of them I'd be happy to put on that table. What you got?

course.. one man's "garbage".. is another man's "gold".

and it's not just about benchmarks and e-PEEN'ing boys and girls.. because when you combine that with an 8x HDD/R0 storage volume?.. I save massive amounts of time saved whenever I task this machine.

And for the lifespan doubters? 1.5 years so far and even stronger performance than new due to better firmware. Hate that. D:

I actually tried burners idea for a while, but used a USB 3 enclosure, which makes much more sense! I still have the USB enclosure, but I now use the SSD in my latpop.

Some manufacturers don't allow sale listings before an "official" launch.
I emailed one of the UK's biggest computer hardware specialists and they said they were still trying to get one in as a sample to test before deciding on whether to stock it or not.

Suprising that they test individual products but either way I'll be suprised if the 830 makes an appearance this month.

I never understood why SSD makers focused on laptops... trying to convince someone to switch their ONLY laptop drive from a 500GB HDD to a 32GB or 64GB SSD is insanity. Things did get better with reasonably sized and priced SSDs in the 80-160GB range nowadays but its still quite a hit.

But for a desktop it made sense to install windows only and some programs to a 32/64GB drive with TBs of storage on secondary HDD... For my own use the 80GB intel SSD still exceeds my SSD space needs thanks to the accompanying HDD.

@OP: Could you clarify, how much space do you actually need on your laptop?

I would personally get either a 64GB or 120GB SSD and one of the HDD trays that goes in your optical drive bay, and then get a USB DVD/RW drive. How often do you need that dumb optical drive that's taking up precious space in your laptop?

Well, they claim to have. Sandfoce has new firmware out and OCZ implements it in their 2.15 release which is just out. So yes, they claim to have gotten better in the last couple of days. Only time will tell. I have my OCZ drive working well after a lot of hassle, but if considering OCZ or any other Sandforce drive, I'd wait a bit to see if it really is fixed.
