I bought a Hauppauge WinTV-1600 and I needed some help with getting it set up.

It was pulled from an HP media PC so it's just the bare card and the HP remote that looks like THIS

There was no software or anything else that came with it, so I was just looking for some help on how to set it up to get the most out of it (especially since it came with an HP remote). Any help would be appreciated.

I have that card and am using gbpvr (is free). Their forum gives great support from the author.

Nice program, takes commercials out when you play back recordings, but was a bit of a learning curve for myself.

The remote should just be a standard Vista MCE remote. It should be recognized by any Vista installation*. For software you can use GBPVR, Vista MCE, BeyondTV, MythTV, etc. Drivers are available from Hauppauge, it's called the HVR-1600.

* I'm assuming the IR receiver was a separable device, or was it built-in?

WINTV from the hauppauge website works absolutely fine if you don't need any program guide. You can even find the scheduler program there for scheduling recordings.

I've tried MCE and all the others... they have good extras but WINTV does the job great (if you're just watching/recording tv) in all my years experience with it.

Thanks for the advice guys. So if I understand right, the remote was designed for Vista MCE (XP MCE as well?) and would be fully functional with that, but if I use XP Pro and installed GBPVR, BeyondTV etc. the remote would still work but only for TV functions?

Sorry, I know I sound like a newb but this stuff is a little confusing.

ViRGE, yes the IR receiver is a seperate USB device.

I quit using my remotes (for both tuner cards), as just too clumsy.

You may have to fiddle with the drivers (particularly the PnP IDs in the INF file) if you're using it on XP. I'm not quite sure how the driver situation works there. In this case it's not the remote that matters, but the IR receiver. Assuming you can get the remote/receiver pair to work, most PVR applications recognize MCE remotes and should know what to do with most of the buttons.
