Purchased my first gun today

I have been wanting to get a rifle for a while now after going out shooting with a few buddies. I had never shot before and the first time I went out I shot an M1 Garand, Mosin Nagant, AR-15, AK-47, a couple different pistols, an SKS and a few others. I loved it and have gone a few more times since. I went up to the gun shop today hoping to buy a mosin nagant, but ended up walking out with an SKS.

Its a Chinese SKS, I believe a 70s model from the little bit of looking online I did. Its in great condition with no knicks or dings in the wood. It looks brand new. It was too late when I got done to go out and shoot it today so I am hoping to go tomorrow. I love the quality of it though. All the numbers match on it too, only thing I don't like is it didn't come with a bayonet, but I plan on purchasing one.

I want to add a few modifications, but not really sure where to go to look for them. I want to get a spike bayonet. It looks like they are around $10 online, so I will probably just do that. I also want to add a detachable magazine, not sure what size or anything yet. I am going to go out and shoot a little bit and see how fast I go through ammo before I decide on that. I also am considering a new stock. I love the wood, but I want a collapsible stock.

I don't have my camera tonight, but I took a few pictures with my phone. I plan to add some more tomorrow.

Added the 20 Round Magazine and bayonet yesterday.

Nice, a yugo sks was one of my first rifles. Fun weapon. I wouldn't go with the detachable magazine though, just buy some stripper clips.

Agreed on not bothering with the detached magazine setup.

Congrats and enjoy ...

I just picked up a AK strikeforce kit for my WASR and what a difference a adjustable stock makes ...

pic of the kit

6 position stock,grip and upper / lower front "furniture" w/ 3 x 2" Picatinny Rails and 1 x 4" rail.

Just be careful about the cheap 7.62x39mm ammo you can find for those rifles. Some of it is steel jacketed. If you shoot too much of that stuff it will wear out your rifling since the jacket is nearly as hard as your barrel. Then your accuracy will go to crap.

AKs look best with their stock furniture. If you're going to tart up a rifle, do it to an AR.

I for one think it looks very good!

Very nice.

I went out and shot it yesterday and loved it. I went ahead and ordered a 20 round magazine, bayonet, manual, and some stripper clips. Gonna play around with the 20 round magazine and the stripper clips and see if I can get them both to work. I am also looking at possibly purchasing a Tapco T-6. Does anyone here have one?

Don't have to worry about that in an AK though, if he ever gets one - their accuracy is already crap.

I most likely overpaid, but I was wanting to get one local and it was the cheapest I found local. It was listed for $295 I got it for $280.

They seem to have gone up in price recently. I paid $300 for mine about 4-5 months back, mine has the detachable mag though. Otherwise ours looks pretty close to the same.

I have a Russian version that has a milled receiver and laminated stock. I got it for $109 brand new in the cosmoline in 1998. I should shoot it sometime.... I think its stamped 1953.
