I played them both, and liked them both. Quit them both for different reasons. Rift I quit because during the first few months they were swinging the nerf bat around without any real thinking done on it. It did ruin a few of the high level dungeon encounters for awhile until they swung the balance back. That to me shows ineptitude and incompetence for their balance designers. Who have a greater impact on overall gameplay than any other employee at a company. A company that lets those guys have free reign is going to run into problems with their player base. Many quit after the 4th month when they were going nuts. The game I heard after the major leaving was practically a ghost land of players. Which is the reason they tried to undo what they did and had to switch to F2P to get players interested in trying the game again. I'll never be tempted by that bait. So I quit and quit for good. Also they had account security problems as well. I had quit the game and actually hadn't played it for 8 months when I got an email from them saying they noticed my account was hacked and stuff was stolen. This was with me having their authenticator too. Even though I wasn't playing I found it quite funny. I called their customer support wondering what it was about. They verified over the phone my account had been hacked and that they "restored" it for me. I told them it didn't matter because I wasn't playing but thanks anyway.
As for GW2, they had a bad rash of account security problems. I got hacked early on. They didn't have an authenticator so I was making sure I was using a unique and hard to hack password with max amount of characters in my password for max entropy. I don't share my password or account with anyone and at the time was single so living alone. 3 weeks after release my account was hacked and everything stolen. So I contacted customer service since the breach was on their end and asked for them to restore the account or do a rollback. They said they had no way to do that according to a few CS reps and even in game GMs I spoke with. The fact they admitted that the whole account security thing was their fault and that they couldn't restore any of the affected accounts (or wouldn't even if they could), soured me to that game based off their management. So I quit that day and haven't looked back. This was despite a ton of my friends still playing the game at the time.
The other F2P game I was sort of into was NWO. It was ok for a game, but they were heavy handed with handing out bans. The game was a massive exploit fest. The main management company, Perfect World Entertainment (PWE), was doing major damage control everywhere. Especially on the forums. As many of the exploits were being complained about massively on their official forums. I made a single post in a thread stating that while the exploitation sucks, people should just wait for the company to fix them while playing the game as how they want without worrying overly much what the cheaters were doing. It's not like the cheaters were directly affecting their gameplay. Well a mod decided to get heavy handed and just started banning anyone posting in any thread discussing the current state of the game in regards to exploits. So I got banned from my first online game ever because of that one post. Which means I'll never play another PWE game in my life again. Nor will I ever recommend anyone play one of their games.
I don't know how the management has changed in regards to Rift or GW2, but they had some pretty bad incompetence at one point. Same thing with FFXIV. There was a reason I quit that game within the first two weeks despite loving the beta and buying the really expensive super collectors edition version of the game. I know they had to do that whole realm reborn bit and change out their entire management structure with regards to the game. I hear great things about it. However, I won't ever go back to that game despite how "good" it may have become. Companies now only have 1 chance to win me over. I'm pretty lenient, but gross negligence, ineptitude, and incompetence will make me leave and never come back.
