Purchased a RX 480 couple weeks ago, now a 580 comes out should I return?

Hey guys,

I just purchased an Asus Strix RX 480, great card. But the newer version just came out!

Should I return the RX 480 and get the 580?

I heard there isn't much of a difference, but it kind of sucks to have last year's version for almost same price.

Well it wouldn't be an Asus, but I can get the MSI or XFX or Gigabyte version. Haven't seen the Asus version of 580 yet.

Any advice?

thanks,

How much did you pay?

If you paid a lot less then keep it. If it's nearly the same price then sure, go for the 580.

Depending on your Retailer/Local Laws and any Restocking Fees, it might be good to do so. It's only about a 10% performance difference, but it is an improvement.

Not unless you can get full purchase price back for your 480. 580 isn't that much faster, considering the rather large power budget increase it requires to push out that performance.

+30 watts power, +6%-10% speed. Unless the cost is about the same I'd keep the 480.

The only reason you might want to pay extra for the 580 is if you spend a lot of time watching movies and TV shows on this PC. If yes, the new middle power state will cut power use and possibly noise compared to the 480. The noise part assumes they both have similar fan setups -- a better cooler on the 480 could make it run more quietly than a weak cooler on the 580.

I guess it depends on what you paid for it. If you got the Strix for a good price, I'd just keep it. Otherwise it might not be a bad idea depending on how good of an OC you can get. Some of the 580's being sold have a 10% higher clock speed compared to the Strix RX 480, but if you can get close to 1400 MHz with your own OC then a 580 doesn't represent much added value. I don't know if Chill was something for just the 500-series or not, but I don't think it's a killer feature that's a must have.

1. Price you paid, and will you get full refund?
2. Country
3. Website limitations (are you amazon only? Newegg?)

Then we may be able to point out better 580s for a similar price. Or, recommend to you that it's not worth it.

I wouldn't bother with sending it back, the 580 isn't that much faster then the 480.

Its the exact same chip. Id just overclock your 480 and get exactly the same thing with way less hassle.

The price hike for performance gain probably isnt worth it. If it was a Vega card, i'd probably be singing a different tune

Wow, thanks for all the replies,

Well to be honest, I never overclock-- I'm not that hardcore, unfortunately. I just wanted my money's worth. I didn't want to feel like an idiot who overpaid for a last gen card. I paid exactly $239.99 for the Asus RX 480 Strix card. Now the same card is priced even higher at $264.99!.... The Asus Strix version of RX-580 is $274.99. Which I don't want to pay that high.

HOWEVER, I can get an RX-580 either XFX or MSI or Gigabyte or Sapphire version for around the same exact price I got the RX-480 for -- $239 / $249. Out of these listed brands I named, who would you trust?

@crisium - Yes, currently, Amazon only. I get free shipping, and have a good long standing account with them.

Seems like majority say they're the same exact card, just different clock speeds. I'll flip a coin and see how I feel. It is a pain in the ass to drive to UPS etc.

XFX is my preferred brand from those

That said, unless it has a better cooler than the one you have, I wouldn't bother.

@Bacon1 and @ElFenix , and to everyone else, thanks guys.

I guess I'll stick with the RX 480. I like Asus anyways. Time is money, Don't want to drive to UPS, wait for 2 days-- blah blah.

If all of you guys say its the same card, just slightly faster. I'll hold. Worse case I buy another one in 2 years and run them together.

Cheers,

Good day,

Good day,

FWIW folks have successfully flashed the RX580 bios to the 480 and are getting the increased clocks. This is only applicable on AIB GPUs as reference cards use a single 6 pin connector. Midrange and up AIB cards typically have 8 pin and can handle the extra power draw.

This is at your own risk of course and YMMV but 480 is great as it is.
