Since I'm getting a puppy in about 2 weeks I am going through the house and trying to puppy-proof everything I can think of.

One thing I am kind of stumped on is my tv stand.

It's a cheap black wooden tv stand from wal-mart. I has 3 "shelves", 1 at top where tv sits, 1 in the middle (ps3), and 1 at the bottom, at about floor level (sat. receiver), and it's open, no door, panel, or anything. in front. Back is also open.

I was thinking about getting a sheet of thin plexiglass (drill holes for airflow) or just some sort of wire mesh to block off the front. It would need to be about 20" long by 17.5" high.

Just something temporary (and very inexpensive) until I can train him enough to not try to get in there and easy enough for me to move out of the way to either insert a blu-ray or dvd and for the remote to be able to change channels, etc.

any suggestions?

Make sure to leave anything you value well out of reach. My brother's chewed up his ps3 and Xbox controllers that were sitting on a high table. Otherwise, until housebroken a crate or baby gates to keep him in a hard floor area at night.

Also, prepare for the whining :D

Just tire him out. We haven't had many issues with ours. A tired puppy is an obedient puppy. When you aren't around, I suggest crate/cage. Read up on cage training before you do it though so you aren't using it as punishment.

rip up all the carpets. they will piss on it and you'll never know when/where but you'll smell it every time you walk in the door.

Also, baby gates to keep him out of areas you might not want him in. Make sure you keep all shoes in closets too. My pup chewed the hell out of any shoe that wasn't locked up. Even if she had a bone or chew toy readily available..It's like they know not to chew the show, but do it anyway because they like being naughty.
